Job description

The ETSU College of Nursing, Office of Practice invites applications for a PRN Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner to support the University Health Center, located on the ETSU Johnson City, TN campus.

The PRN Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides advanced psychiatric care in accordance with the Tennessee Nurse Practice Act. Responsibilities include prescribing and managing psychotropic medications, delivering psychotherapeutic treatments, and maintaining thorough documentation. The PRN PMHNP collaborates with psychiatrists, clinic staff, social workers, and leadership, supervises assigned staff, participates in quality assurance initiatives, and is dedicated to serving vulnerable populations.

Key Functions and Expected Performance

  • Provides Advanced Practice Psychiatric Mental Health Care in compliance with the TN Nurse Practice Act.
  • Provides initial psychiatric evaluation, med checks and psychiatric consults and provides treatment of psychiatric/behavioral health disorders.
  • Provides screening and health promotion.
  • Prescribes and/or directs psychotherapeutic treatments or medication to treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Provides patient and family education.
  • Complies with OSHA, HIPAA, CLIA, Medicare, Medicaid and other state and federal regulations.
  • Documents accurately all services, including electronic or hard copy patient charts, encounter forms, coding.
  • Collaborates with psychiatrist, clinic staff, social workers, clinic director, and preceptor as needed to provide care.
  • Supervises staff as assigned.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities by evaluating own performance and identifying and implementing actions for continuous quality improvement.
  • Participates in professional development to maintain certification and improve and update practice.
  • Treats all clients with respect.
  • Participates in community psychiatric/behavioral health outreach and screenings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

This is a temporary position working 15 – 22.5 hours per week and has the potential to become a permanent position.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge and skill in assessment, diagnoses, and treatment of common acute and chronic health conditions.
  • Knowledge of recognized standards of care.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize and set priorities.
  • Required Qualifications
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Psychiatric and Mental Health with preparation in advanced practice nursing (PMHNP, FNP, ANP, PNP or other specialty as required for position.)
  • Current unencumbered license as Registered Nurse in Tennessee of compact state.
  • National certification in appropriate area (PMHNP-BC).
  • Certificate to fitness to prescribe.
  • Experience as specified for each position.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) years of experience in advanced practice nursing (PMHNP, FNP, ANP, PNP or other specialty as required for position.)
