About the role

The Lecturer provides evidence-based therapeutic services, assessments, and individualized treatment plans to support the mental health of medical students and residents. Student Mental Health Counselor

Job Summary The Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) invites applications for a full-time, 12-month faculty position Lecturer – Student Mental Health Counselor. This is a renewable term faculty appointment in the Department of Medical Library and Learning Resources. Faculty type and rank will be determined based upon the successful candidate’s qualifications.

The Lecturer will support student success by promoting behavioral health and fostering the personal growth and well-being of medical students and residents. This position is responsible for assessing student needs, developing individualized treatment plans, and providing evidence-based therapeutic services. The role also includes outreach, prevention programming, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary student support model.

This position reports to the Director of Counseling and Academic Resource Essential Services (CARES) and the Lead Student Mental Health Counselor and works closely with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.

  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport and sustain effective therapeutic relationships
  • Knowledge of diagnostic processes and evidence-based treatment modalities
  • Ability to provide diverse and culturally responsive clinical interventions
  • Strong presentation and outreach skills related to mental health education
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population, including underserved or underrepresented groups
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with clinical documentation systems and standard office software
  • Ability to work independently with general supervision and prioritize workload effectively
  • Understanding of confidentiality and ethical practice standards
  • Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a closely related field
  • Current licensure to independently practice mental health counseling in the State of Tennessee (or eligibility for licensure prior to start date)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with graduate, medical, or professional student populations
  • Knowledge of medical education environments and associated stressors
  • Experience with crisis intervention and brief therapy models

Requirements
