Position Summary

The ASL Language Lab Assistant will provide ASL instructional support to UNC students enrolled in ASL I-VI campus-based and online coursework. The ASL Language Lab Assistant will facilitate individual and small group interactions to supplement and strengthen the language units taught in the courses.

This is a semester-long, part-time assignment that has the potential for renewal each semester, including fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Job Duties

The ASL Language Lab Assistant must be a native/near-native ASL user who is a member of the Deaf Community, with the skills to accurately model ASL, identify the student’s language challenges, and implement successful language learning interventions. In addition, the ASL Language Lab Assistant needs outstanding soft skills to meet a variety of students where they are emotionally and academically across three years of ASL coursework at UNC.

The ASL Language Lab Assistant will work independently and therefore will need to exercise critical thinking and judgment in all their interactions. As a member of the Department, the ASL Language Lab Assistant will need to be familiar with federal laws (e.g., FERPA) and UNC policies (e.g., technology users’ policy), as well as some of the external regulatory bodies that influence the ASLIS philosophy and course design (e.g., American Council on Teaching Foreign Language, Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education).

Finally, the ASL Language Lab Assistant will work with technology in the lab and at a distance and need familiarity with these media.
