Provides primary patient care, education, and consultation for patients with ostomies, wounds, and continence issues. Responsible for educating nursing staff, developing care guidelines, and managing product cost-effectiveness.
Requires a Bachelor's degree and a valid Registered Nurse license from the Ohio Board of Nursing. Candidates must have at least 2 years of general nursing experience and knowledge of specialty support surfaces and wound care products.
Summary: Provides primary patient care and education to the ostomy patient using the nursing process in a therapeutic and educational manner. Serves as consultant, educator to the hospital staff in the care of patients with ostomies, wounds, skin breakdown, draining tube sites and incontinence. Provides clinical experience, expertise and product knowledge. Responsibilities And Duties: 40% Provides consultations for patients with ostomies, wounds and continence problems. Assess patient to determine plan of care to address care needs relative to ostomy or continent diversions, draining wounds and fistulas, and percutaneous tubes. Reports and obtains orders from physicians and communicates and educates nursing staff. Coordinates and obtains consent for services from third party payors. Provides comprehensive documentation of services rendered. Consultation services may also be provided to alternate case sites. 20% Educates patients and family with difficult ostomies, wounds, and continence problems. Educates patient and family regarding care of ostomies, wounds, and continence, including appropriate appliances and/or dressings and how to obtain them. 10% Cares for patients with large draining wounds, fistulas, incontinence to control odor, drainage, protect skin, and contain cost and promote comfort. This may be provided by follow-up visits, both inpatient and outpatient as needed. 15% Provides ongoing education to nursing staff. Provides formal inservices on a regular basis and as needed to ensure current knowledge and competence. Develops and revises policies, procedures and guidelines related to wound, ostomy, and continence care. 5% Participates in hospital committees and staff meetings. Utilizes findings of QI and other related activities to improve clinical practice and documentation. 10% Maintains records and statistics to generate monthly reports indicating number of patients seen. Analyzes stock items and recommends appropriate additions and deletions to assure quality and cost-effectiveness of products used for wound, ostomy, and continence care. Contributes to research studies related to wound ostomy and continence care when feasible
