Deaf Strong Hospital is an educational activity with first year medical students at UR SMD. This role-reversal activity requires the involvement of at least 30 deaf actors who are community members to play the role of healthcare professionals while the medical students play their role as patients. This is to sensitize the medical students on issues related to working with patients who primarily use American Sign Language (ASL), and/or English as a second language. The actors are given various roles to play; doctors, psychiatrists, pharmacists, and receptionists. Each actor will undergo a brief training to learn the dos and don’ts of the role play activity and rehearse a prepared script prior to the actual activity with medical students. Additionally, the actors assist with the setting up and clean-up of tables, chairs, signage, materials, and assembling and dissembling portable privacy curtains.
