Position Overview

Gulliver Preparatory School seeks a highly skilled, student-centered mathematics educator to serve as an Upper School Mathematics Specialist. This position is designed to support students across the mathematics program through targeted intervention, enrichment, acceleration, and individualized academic coaching. The Specialist will also support curriculum development/mapping for our math department.

The Mathematics Specialist works closely with students, faculty, department leadership, counselors, and families to ensure that every student achieves meaningful growth in mathematics. Through individual and small-group instruction, data analysis, progress monitoring, and strategic collaboration with classroom faculty, the Specialist helps students strengthen foundational skills, deepen conceptual understanding, and reach their full mathematical potential.

The ideal candidate possesses deep content knowledge, expertise in mathematics pedagogy, strong diagnostic and intervention skills, and a belief that all students can achieve at high levels when provided with appropriate support and challenge.

The Mathematics Specialist plays an important role in advancing Gulliver's vision of developing mathematically confident problem solvers who understand concepts deeply, reason logically, communicate effectively, and apply mathematics creatively to solve complex problems.

Student Support, Intervention, and Acceleration

  • Intervention and Academic Support
  • Provide individualized and small-group mathematics instruction to students requiring additional support.
  • Diagnose student misconceptions, learning gaps, and areas of difficulty through assessment data, classroom performance, and faculty referrals.
  • Design and implement targeted intervention plans that address specific mathematical concepts and skills.
  • Monitor student progress regularly and adjust instructional strategies as needed.
  • Support students in developing effective learning strategies, study habits, and mathematical confidence.
  • Partner with classroom faculty to reinforce learning objectives and provide coordinated support.
  • Enrichment and Acceleration
  • Provide individualized and small-group enrichment opportunities for students demonstrating exceptional aptitude and achievement in mathematics.
  • Support advanced learners in pursuing accelerated coursework and independent mathematical inquiry.
  • Assist students in preparing for advanced mathematics courses and competitions.
  • Develop enrichment experiences that emphasize problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and intellectual curiosity.
  • Support students interested in mathematics-related research, STEM opportunities, and academic competitions.
  • Data Analysis and Progress Monitoring
  • Utilize benchmark assessments, classroom assessments, standardized testing data, and other measures to identify student strengths and needs.
  • Maintain systems for monitoring student growth and intervention effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with faculty and department leadership to analyze student performance data and identify trends.
  • Participate in regular data review meetings to inform instructional planning and student support strategies.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of benchmark assessments and progress-monitoring systems.
  • Collaboration and Instructional Support
  • Work collaboratively with mathematics faculty to strengthen differentiation and student support within Tier I instruction.
  • Assist faculty in identifying students who may benefit from intervention, enrichment, or acceleration.
  • Collaborate with faculty, counselors, administrators, and families to support student success.
  • Contribute to department initiatives related to instructional improvement, curriculum alignment, and assessment practices.
  • Support implementation of school-wide mathematics initiatives and best practices.
  • Academic Competitions and Advanced Opportunities
  • Support student participation in mathematics competitions, including Math Olympiad, AMC, and related programs.
  • Assist in organizing enrichment opportunities that promote advanced mathematical thinking.
  • Encourage student engagement in STEM-related competitions, research experiences, and academic challenges.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Valid teaching certification or equivalent credential.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of successful mathematics teaching experience at the secondary level.
  • Demonstrated expertise in mathematics intervention, enrichment, differentiation, and data-informed instruction.
  • Strong understanding of adolescent learning and mathematics pedagogy.
  • Experience with curriculum development/mapping.
  • Ability to build strong student relationships and foster mathematical confidence/persistence.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
