Job description

Summary

Queens University of Charlotte, an NCAA Division I affiliate that competes in the ASUN Conference. Queens University seeks qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Coach for Sports Performance. This position establishes and maintains strength and conditioning programs for all sports, with major goals of improving athletic performance, reducing athletic injuries, and teaching lifelong fitness and movement skills. This position devises training plans according to sound scientific principles, supervises training sessions, evaluates athletes, maintains athlete records. The Assistant Coach for Sports Performance meets regularly with sport coaches to determine what the athletes need to work on. If working with an injured athlete engaged in rehabilitation, this position consults with the sports medicine or athletic training staff. The Assistant Coach for Sports Performance is responsible for maintaining the strength and conditioning facility, and for establishing policies, plans, and procedures for the safe and professional operation of the facility.

This position is considered a Responsible Employee for purposes of the university’s Sexual Misconduct Policy. As such, this position is required to report any incident of sexual misconduct or interpersonal violence to the university’s Title IX Coordinator when made aware of such.

Queens conducts confidential background investigations on candidates as part of the hiring process, including any past NCAA rules violations. According to the NCAA bylaws:

“Contractual agreements or appointments between a coach and an institution shall include the stipulation that a coach who is found in violation of NCAA regulations shall be subject to disciplinary or corrective action as set forth in the provisions of the NCAA enforcement procedures, including suspension without pay or termination of employment for significant or repetitive violations.”

The Assistant Coach for Sports Performance reports directly to the Director of Sports Performance. This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include

  • Design and implement strength training and conditioning programs in-season, off-season, and pre-season for all Queens University sanctioned athletic programs in a manner that reflects research-driven practices.
  • Work in cooperation with the sports medicine or athletic training staff in the rehabilitation and strengthening of injured athletes.

  • Facilitate a collaborative relationship among sport coaches, sports medicine, and the strength and conditioning staff.
  • Design and implement policies and procedures for the strength and conditioning program in accordance with the NCAA, NSCA, and inter-departmental standards and Guidelines.
  • Develop systems for tracking athlete attendance and athlete progress in conjunction with the sport coaches.
  • Conduct an annual needs-analysis for each sport team in conjunction with the sport coach and the team's athletic trainer at the conclusion of each sport season.
  • Annually conduct and review a departmental risk management plan.
  • Complete an annual budgetary proposal for the program that includes routine maintenance, purchase of new equipment, and staffing needs.
  • Oversee the development of professional interns within the field of Strength and Conditioning.
  • Must be able and willing to regularly work evenings and weekends to achieve objectives of the position.
  • Non-Essential Duties

    • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department or university needs.

    • Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required
    • A current relevant professional certification credentialed by the NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS®) certification or CSCCa Strength (SCCC).
    • Current standard first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillation (AED) certifications.
    • A strong working knowledge and teaching skills in analysis and techniques of strength training.
    • Experience and/or expertise in strength and conditioning programming for NCAA collegiate athletes.
    • Strong motivational abilities to leverage in working with student athletes.
    • Evidence of ability to interact positively with student athletes, colleagues, and the public.
    • Ability to demonstrate the appropriate skills and techniques to be used by student athletes. Ability to visually monitor and evaluate athletes’ physical health and fitness.
    • Knowledge of conference and NCAA rules and regulations.
    • Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
    • Proven track record of consistently modeling positive behaviors at all times.
    • Strong follow‐up and follow‐through skills as well as ability to plan, organize and control projects through to completion.
    • Proven ability to handle and maintain confidential information; familiarity with FERPA a plus.
    • Valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license, or ability to attain same by hire date.
    • Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
