Job description

Mental health clinician - Athletics

The Mental Health Clinician for Athletics reports to the Director of the Counseling and Psychological Services Center (CAPS). The primary function of the position is to serve the mental health needs of student-athletes on the University of Tulsa (TU) campus through direct provision of clinical services. This position will be embedded in the TU athletic department and operate with the support of the broader athletic department to include coaches, trainers, academic services, and administrators.

Clinical services that will be provided for this position include providing individual, couples, and group forms of therapeutic intervention for TU student-athletes. Additionally, duties would include providing psychological assessments as needed, psychoeducational programming, and outcome assessments for TU student athletes. This position will rotate with other CAPS professionals in after hours on call coverage to provide crisis response. While direct therapeutic services are not offered to staff or faculty, this position provides general clinical and non-clinical consultations to staff and faculty members in the TU athletic community.

Characteristic duties

  • Serves as initial point of referral for mental health services for student athletes.
  • Maintains regular office hours for clinical appointments, consultations, and intakes designed for the TU intercollegiate student athlete population.
  • Provides individual counseling, couples counseling, group counseling, and skills-based groups.
  • Conducts clinical interviews and initial consultations with student athletes.
  • Develops and/or modifies individualized treatment approaches for student-athletes.
  • Facilitates training, outreach, workshops, and community engagement in conjunction with the TU athletic department.
  • Provides psychoeducation and training for student athletes and athletics department staff regarding student athlete mental health.
  • Collaborates with athletic department staff to support and enhance student athlete wellness.
  • Advocates for the holistic well-being of student athletes across relevant settings.
  • Maintains confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Crisis intervention.
  • Serves after hours on-call rotation with other CAPS professionals.
  • Attends CAPS clinical meetings and other CAPS staffing obligations.

    • Knowledge of compliance with professional laws and ethics.
    • Knowledge of NCAA regulations.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Two years of clinical experience post licensure.
    • Doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA accredited program.
    • Licensure as a Health Service Psychologist in the state of Oklahoma.
    • Two years providing mental health services to student athletes in an educational environment.
    • Demonstrated contextual and cultural understanding of elite sport systems.
    • Demonstrated skills through training and supervised experience in intervention techniques for prevention and treatment of eating disorders, referrals/consultations.
    • Experience with electronic record-keeping and documentation (preferably Titanium Scheduling Software).
    • Experience working with BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and/or international individuals.
