Job description

Middle School Math Teacher

Great Oaks Charter School - Bridgeport | Grades 6 - 8

About Great Oaks Charter School, Bridgeport

Three things are true about us.

One. A child's zip code should not determine their future.

We are a tuition-free public charter school in Bridgeport, built on three pillars: Mastery, Leadership, and Community. Our embedded AmeriCorps tutoring program puts an extra adult in every ELA and Math classroom because small-group instruction should not be a luxury reserved for private schools.

We are not a place that lowers expectations to match circumstances.

Two. We invest in the adults who invest in our students.

Every staff member, in every role, is supported by dedicated academic coaches, real professional development, and a culture where colleagues actually show up for one another. You will not be left to figure it out alone.

We are not interested in burning people out and replacing them. We are interested in building careers.

Three. We are building something for Bridgeport that did not exist before we got here.

What you do at Great Oaks today shapes what is possible for our students tomorrow. That is not a slogan. That is the job.

We are not finished.

If that sounds like the kind of place you want to work, keep reading.

Position Summary

Middle school math is where students either start to see themselves as math people or start to write themselves off. You will be the teacher who refuses to let any student write themselves off.

You will teach the conceptual foundations and procedural fluency students need to succeed in algebra and beyond. You will partner with our embedded AmeriCorps tutors to make sure no student falls through the cracks, and you will collaborate with a math team that takes the work seriously.

  • What You Will Actually Do
  • Plan and deliver engaging, rigorous math instruction aligned to Common Core standards across grades 6, 7, and 8
  • Build students' conceptual understanding alongside procedural fluency, so they know not just how to solve a problem but why the math works
  • Partner closely with AmeriCorps tutors to design and execute small-group instruction that closes specific skill gaps
  • Use formative and summative data to drive your instructional decisions and intervention plans
  • Build a classroom culture where mistakes are part of learning and every student feels safe taking mathematical risks
  • Collaborate with the math team to align curriculum, assessments, and instructional practices across grade levels
  • Communicate consistently with families about student progress, growth, and next steps
  • Participate in weekly professional development and coaching cycles with your dedicated academic coach
  • What We Are Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a related field
  • Connecticut teaching certification in Mathematics or Middle Grades Mathematics, or an active pathway toward it (we are happy to talk through where you are in the process)
  • Strong mathematical content knowledge across middle school topics and into early algebra
  • Classroom management instincts grounded in relationships and high expectations
  • Experience using data to drive instruction
  • A collaborative spirit and the willingness to be coached
  • What You Can Expect From Us
  • A school community that puts students at the center of every decision
  • Dedicated academic coaching and weekly professional development
  • Colleagues who collaborate, share resources, and have your back
  • A leadership team that listens
  • Competitive compensation($56,000+ Based on experience), comprehensive benefits, paid school breaks, and continued participation in the Connecticut State Teachers' Pension System
  • The chance to build something lasting in a community that needs you
