The Registered Dietitian (RD) provides nutritional education and wellness and prevention to the students of Valparaiso University (Valpo) through the Health Center under the guidelines set forth by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). The RD holds state licensure and national certification, which qualifies the RD to work autonomously, as well as, in collaboration with medical, nursing, and allied health care providers to educate and treat the patient, as well as, provide dietetic services for Valpo students.
Major Responsibilities
Providing expert advice on food and nutrition
Educating and advising about healthy eating habits for sustaining and/or achieving a healthy weight
Discussing healthy body mass index level and eating habits for attaining optimal health and preventing illness
Calculate body mass index levels with skin calipers
Performing dietary analysis and developing individualized diet plans
Advising athletes on dietary requirements for optimal performance, recovery, and injury prevention
Developing personalized weight loss or nutritional programs
Accepting referrals from the Health Center providers (e.g. Nurse Practitioners) and providing referrals back to the providers as needed
Records findings and need for follow-up and/or referrals including ordering laboratory and other diagnostic procedures
Serves as a health care resource, interdisciplinary consultant, and patient advocate
Adheres to all pertinent regulatory agency guidelines
Exhibits sensitivity to the diverse cultural backgrounds of Valpo students
Maintains current knowledge, skills, and certification by attending continuing education programs
Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein
Required Knowledge and Skills
Graduate degree from an accredited university, preferred
Successful completion of an approved Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition
Current Indiana RD license
Board certification
At least two years’ experience as a Certified Registered Dietitian
Three to five years previous professional experience
CPR/AED certification or completion within 6 months of hire
Ability to work autonomously, as well as, in collaboration with the providers, nurses, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, team coaches, and supportive staff
Ability to interact effectively with others; interest in and ability to relate to college age students
Ability to maintain good patient relations in all formats of communication and adhere to total patient confidentiality/ethics
Understanding, appreciation and commitment to the goals and philosophy of Valpo
Completion of annual HIPAA and safety training, as well as, competency skills checklists
Position requires the employee to be able to stand for prolonged periods of time, with occasional stooping, bending and lifting up to 50 lbs. Minimal sitting. The position has a moderate amount of stress during high-volume times, requiring the ability to multi-task with the telephones, patients, and multiple simultaneous demands from support staff. Must be able to remain calm in stressful situations. The employee is expected to maintain CPR/AED certification.
