Responsible for appraising and caring for the health needs of students and faculty within the school environment. This includes administering first aid, managing medications, and maintaining compliant medical records.
Requires a graduate of an accredited professional nursing program with a valid Texas registered nurse license and current CPR Healthcare Provider certification. A minimum of two years of nursing experience is required.

Qualifications & Skills: Education/Certification: Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program. Special Knowledge/Skills: Valid registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners.. Current CPR – Healthcare Provider. Minimum Experience: Two years of nursing. Essential Functions School and Student Management: Attendance and punctuality are essential to the successful performance of this job. Because of the daily interaction with students and colleagues, it is essential that the person in this position maintains good attendance. Assess and treat students. Document findings and treatment in computer in medical section of school program that is HIPAA compliant. Notify parents as indicated. Administer first aid for emergencies with appropriate follow-up. Assist with checking in and logging in all medications for the students. Ensure that the appropriate authorizations are complete. Maintain security of medications. Promote a positive, caring climate for learning. Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the school. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with colleagues, students and parents. Provide relevant counseling and guidance to students and parents so they may assume responsibility for maintenance of student health. Assist with filing health records and other clerical duties as assigned. Program Management: Maintain immunization and health information. Keep database updated with information provided in the Student Health Record. Notify parents when students are not compliant with Texas requirements. Maintain privacy of medical records and keep records up to date. Comply with HIPAA regulations including those included in Texas HB 300. Assist with Scoliosis Screening if assigned by the Coordinator of Health Services.: Conduct procedures, process referrals and follow-up relative to signs of scoliosis as mandated by Texas law. Record results of screening in student’s health record. Assist in safely delivering medications following nursing procedures. Assist with implementing a safe system of communicable disease containment. Communicate with teachers and parents when indicated. Comply with and assist in upholding state and school policies. Assist with keeping the clinic clean and well stocked. Work with the other nurses to provide care to students and staff to maintain smooth flow in the clinic. Role of the School Nurse: Identify hazards in the school environment and take appropriate action to eliminate or reduce hazards. Assist with appropriate policy setting for accident prevention and reduction in the school setting. Assist with maintaining campus AEDs/Oxygen units and order supplies when current supplies have expired. Teach age and developmental-level appropriate First Aid or other classes as requested. Assist Coordinator of Health Services to plan for emergencies. Assist with distributing first aid supplies to classrooms. Assist the Coordinator of Health Services in instructing faculty and staff about Universal Precautions/Bloodborne Pathogen Precautions, care of children with certain chronic illness including but not limited to diabetes and asthma, use of injectable epinephrine, commonly used medications- uses, side effects and method of administration.
