The teacher is responsible for planning and executing PE and Health lessons aligned with Tennessee K-5 standards for students with dyslexia. Duties include maintaining a safe learning environment, assessing student performance, and collaborating with school administration.
A bachelor's degree and experience working with school-aged students are required. Previous experience teaching physical education in an elementary school setting is preferred.
Physical Education (PE) and Health Teacher, Roberts Academy (K-5) (part-time term position)
The PE teacher provides direct supervision of and instruction to students in a whole class setting. The PE and Health teacher will plan and execute lessons aligned to the Tennessee K-5 Physical Education Standards as well as the Tennessee K-5 Health and Wellness Standards. Teachers work closely with fellow teachers and the school administration to provide instruction and support to all students of the Academy. The PE and Health teacher will teach approximately seven PE classes and two health classes per week.
This is a part-time (approx. 10-12 hours per week), term position for the 2026-2027 school year. PE and Health classes will be held between 12:00 and 3:00 Monday - Friday.
About the Work Unit
Roberts Academy is an elementary school for students with dyslexia. In the 2026-2027 school year, the Academy will enroll students in 3rd – 5thgrade.
The Roberts Academy’s instructional approach follows the principles of intensive intervention for students with dyslexia who have the most persistent academic needs. Students at Roberts Academy receive individualized, evidence-based instruction that seeks to leverage their unique strengths and interests while intentionally targeting their greatest areas of need. While specifically a school for students with dyslexia, Roberts Academy offers a comprehensive program and learning environment that provides students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to transition to a variety of school settings.
1. Maintains a clean, safe, orderly learning environment which contributes to children’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development.
2. Conscientiously supervises children. 1. Provides supervision during transitions to and from the Physical Education classroom, gymnasium, or outdoor facility.
3. Implements the school's programs and curricula, providing instruction directly aligned to the Tennessee Physical Education K-5 Standards.
4. Creates unit and lesson plans aligned to each of the Categories that comprise the Tennessee Physical Education and Health & Wellness K-5 Standards
5. Establishes and implements behavior management in accordance with a positive behavior support approach.
6. Regularly assesses student performance.
7. Consistently meets requirements for timely filling of documentation as required, including injury or incident reports.
8. Consults with the administrative team as needed to provide input on curriculum and individual child supports.
9. Coordinates and implements specific instructional strategies with classroom team members.
10. Develops and maintains positive relationships with students.
11. Responds to professional emails promptly.
12. Seeks outside resources (RA admin, faculty, consult therapists) as necessary to meet classroom and student needs.
13. Facilitates positive experiences for student workers, student volunteers, and practicum students at all levels.
14. Models desired practices for interactions with children (group or individual), preparation of the environment, and interactions with families.
15. Displays a commitment to elementary education and the education of students with dyslexia. 1. Attends and participates in required professional development or training.
16. Displays professionalism. 1. Follows guidelines and policies of RA and Vanderbilt University. 2. Upholds student and family confidentiality. 3. Interacts with students, parents, other staff, outside professionals, volunteers, and administration professionally. 4. Upholds the RA Mission.
This position does not have supervisory responsibility. This position reports administratively and functionally to the Director of Roberts Academy. However, there may be opportunities to provide feedback to Vanderbilt University students assigned to the classroom.
