The Teacher's Assistant (Achievement Specialist) provides direct support to students with developmental and intellectual disabilities in a classroom setting. This role assists teachers with instruction, implements classroom activities, supports individualized learning, and helps students develop academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally. Essential Responsibilities Assist the Special Education Teacher in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Support students during classroom instruction, small group learning, and one-on-one activities. Help create a positive, engaging, and inclusive classroom environment. Assist students with communication, social skills, behavioral support, and daily routines. Support students during meals, toileting, hygiene, transitions, and recreational activities as needed. Adapt instructional materials and classroom activities to meet individual student needs. Monitor student progress and communicate observations to the classroom teacher. Assist with classroom organization, cleanliness, and safety. Build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues. Utilize computers and electronic systems for attendance and classroom documentation. Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, and professional development. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all school policies and procedures.
Required High School Diploma or GED. Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with children, preferably in a school, childcare, or special education setting. Experience working with children with developmental or intellectual disabilities is strongly preferred. Teacher's Assistant experience. Ability to use a computer with basic proficiency. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds. Ability to bend, kneel, sit on the floor, and actively engage with children throughout the day. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors. Excellent communication, teamwork, and organizational skills. Strong commitment to inclusion, respect, and student success. Preferred DCF 45-Hour Child Care Training Certificate or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire. CPR and First Aid Certification. Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Creole) is a plus.
