  • Category: Instructional FacultyBullis School seeks an Upper School Social Studies Teacher for the 2026-2027 academic year to join a collaborative department committed to growing an academic program that celebrates a broad range of voices and perspectives. The Social Studies department offers a variety of on-level and AP Social Studies courses including Human Geography, US History, US Government, World History, Comparative Government, and Psychology. Responsibilities include teaching five classes, contributing to department initiatives, and advising. This is a 10-month position reporting to the Chair of the Social Studies Department. The Bullis Social Studies program equips students to develop a deep understanding of their communities and the broader world - past and present - so they can become responsible, empathetic global citizens. Each course emphasizes the development of key skills and competencies, including content knowledge, critical thinking, research, writing, and presentation. Students are expected not only to engage actively in these areas throughout each course, but also to demonstrate meaningful growth and, ultimately, mastery. This position offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced educator to collaborate with curricular leaders across the school in an academic review process that ensures diverse perspectives, histories, and experiences are meaningfully incorporated into the curriculum. Duties & QualificationsEssential Functions Teach five classes per academic year Duties within the community, including student advising or other extracurricular activities Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the basic instructional philosophy Collaborate with social studies colleagues to further advance department goals and initiatives Participate and collaborate with teachers and other subject area experts on grade-level and interdisciplinary teams Use technology to enhance students’ active, experiential, and hands-on learning Create learning environments that encourage risk-taking and deep learning for students with a range of learning abilities using a variety of methods and technology Use of reflection and feedback aimed at continued growth in the field of teaching and working with young people Remain current in pedagogical practices and field-related trends Attend Upper School divisional, social studies department, grade-level, and interdisciplinary team meetings Communicate with parents, school counselors, and administrators on students’ progress, as needed and appropriate. Design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standard and provide timely feedback to students Use the student learning management system to provide timely feedback, grades, and assignments to students Other Duties Additional duties as assigned by the Head of Upper School Continued professional development endeavors Qualities of a Bullis Social Studies Teacher An appreciation and respect for high school-aged students as learners and people, through challenging and joyful moments alike Use of reflection and feedback aimed at continued growth in the field of teaching and working with young people Commitment and knowledge to work with, teach, and lead groups of diverse individuals in respectful, equitable, and inclusive ways Experience creating learning environments that encourage risk-taking and deep learning for students with a range of learning abilities using a variety of methods and technology Knowledge of curriculum standards and applications in the subject area Good cheer, humor, and warmth, balanced by professionalism and sound judgment
