  • Category: OtherLighthouse Central Florida is a mission-driven, values-based organization providing an optimal blend of rehabilitation training services and real-world applications to help individuals of all ages, who live with any degree of vision loss, to adjust to their reality with grace and confidence so they can remain active, productive members of our community. We are seeking a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) who will provide expertise and collaborate on vision-specific program curricula and instruction for the Children's and Transition Program. This role will participate in and support the Children's/Transition Program and the values and mission of Lighthouse Central Florida (LCF) as a rehabilitation team member, and will maintain the confidentiality of program participants in accordance with State and Federal regulations. This role may also support IEP-related contracts within the community, travel to schools, and provide educational supports to students.

  • Responsibilities: Conduct Comprehensive Assessments and functional vision evaluations to establish, in consultation with parent(s) or guardian, an Individual Service Plan including immediate and long-term goals and including assessment, plans of care, and instruction based on established individual goals and professional standards for vision rehabilitation program clients and/or Comprehensive Assessments needed for educational IEP related services if servicing a school contract. Attend a mix of Program events on Wednesday afternoons, some Friday afternoons, some Weekends, and the Summer Programming and/or school IEP-related service provision. Coordinate the implementation of service plans and curricula with other team members. May provide home, community, and center-based instruction appropriate to the client’s needs. If required, collaborate with other community agencies as a member of the client’s and family's IEP team and, if needed, collaborate with local school districts as a member of the client’s IEP team. Complete required reports to document the client’s progress, including assessments, goals, daily and monthly progress reports, and data entry.
  • QualificationsQualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Visual Disabilities Education, Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or other related degree required A Master's Degree from an accredited university emphasizing Orientation and Mobility is preferred.

Experience

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience teaching or working with children with a disability is preferred.

  • Knowledge and
  • Skills: Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Possess a working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. Possess an ability to utilize the database for client demographics, documentation, and agency reports. Possess practical organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
  • Physical
  • Demands: Moderate physical effort is required. Moderate ability to move and lift items, usually up to 40 lbs. Strength to physically assist visually impaired and multi-handicapped children. Climbing stairs, walking. Reaching and grasping, carrying, pushing, and pulling. Stooping, kneeling, bending, and crouching to work with children on the floor. Ability to actively participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor field trips. Ability to move about independently. Prolonged standing upon occasion, prolonged sitting at a workstation.

Requirements

Maintain required certification and license. As travel could be a job function, possess reliable transportation. Must pass Level II background checks. All descriptions have been reviewed to ensure that only essential functions and basic duties have been included. Requirements, skills, and abilities included have been determined to be the minimal standards required to successfully perform the positions.
