The specialist plans and coordinates leisure and physical education activities for youth in a residential program to develop teamwork and interpersonal skills. They are also responsible for creating individual recreation plans and collaborating with treatment teams to track student progress.
A Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Recreation Therapy, or a related field is required. Candidates must have at least one year of experience working with youth and in recreational programming.
1. Plans, organizes, conducts and/or coordinates all leisure-time, physical education and recreation activities provided to youth. 2. Plans and directs group activities aimed at developing appropriate group interaction behavior, a sense of team work and fairness, interpersonal communication skills and cooperation and ensures that order and discipline are maintained during recreation periods. 3. Prepares scheduled events and insures that required equipment and other materials are in place. 4. Teaches physical education, hygiene, sanitation and good personal habits. 5. Participates in the maintenance, procurement and selection of equipment, facilities, supplies and other materials for leisure-time activities and physical education programs. 6. Assesses the recreation/leisure needs of youth and develops an individual Recreation and Leisure Plan consisting of goals and objectives to be met while in the residential program as well as the value and importance of participation in recreation and leisure activities upon returning to the community. 7. Communicates students’ individual needs, progress, and accomplishments to the facility treatment team. 8. Develop community partnerships to ensure a variety of recreation and leisure activities are available to youth both on and off campus. 9. Collects, inputs, analyzes, and reports data in order to communicate individual and program outcome measures.
