Provide in-person academic assistance to students in various content areas to help them become independent learners. Facilitate learning through one-to-one appointments, drop-in support, and class-embedded tutoring.
Must be a current SNHU student with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and successful completion of discipline-specific courses. Requires three letters of recommendation and strong subject matter knowledge.
Assist students academically to help them improve their knowledge in specific content areas and/or enhance their study skills. Motivate students and help them develop confidence through positive feedback on areas of improvement. Fulfill student support roles as assigned, which may include drop-in support, one-to-one appointments, class embedded tutoring, and other tutoring initiatives set by tutoring coordinators. Participate in ongoing training and professional development sessions to strengthen leadership, communication, and career readiness. Arrive on time and prepared for all scheduled sessions. Check office communications daily for assignments, announcements, and correspondence. Submit payroll hours and tracking forms promptly after each shift. Interpersonal Expectations: Employ critical thinking to assess tutee needs and adapt tutoring strategies to meet various learning styles and backgrounds. Demonstrate professionalism by being punctual, prepared, and maintaining confidentiality at all times. Collaborate with fellow tutors and staff to foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful learning environment. Communicate academic concepts clearly, promoting active learning and engagement. Model and teach study habits, time management, and academic success strategies covered in tutor training. Support equity and inclusion by creating a welcoming space for all students regardless of background, identity, or academic level.
Current enrollment as a part/full-time SNHU student. Cumulative SNHU GPA of 3.0 or higher. Successful completion of discipline specific courses - additional requirements may vary by discipline. Provide 3 letters of recommendation with at least one from a faculty member relevant to the subject area they are applying to. Strong knowledge of subject matter. Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality. Strong interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to students from diverse backgrounds. Learning Outcomes: Develop skills to assist tutees in specific content areas using multiple in-person modalities and develop specific differentiated tutoring strategies to meet various needs of learners based on learner preferences, strengths/weaknesses, background, or prior knowledge. Explain, demonstrate, and incorporate study habits, motivation, and academic success strategies consistent with those emphasized during tutor training. Effectively communicate transferable skills and professional experience to support future employment and personal growth. Practice active listening and verbal/written communication to assist and motivate tutees. Use inclusive practices and cultural competence to support learners of diverse backgrounds and identities. Take initiative in tutoring sessions and contribute to the growth of the tutoring community. Uphold ethical standards and workplace responsibilities in alignment with SNHU values. Collaborate with tutoring staff and academic services to support shared goals and student success. Utilize digital tools to strengthen learning and provide flexible support modalities. Work Hours: Hours vary. Office Hours: Mondays-Thursdays: 9:00am-6:00pm, Fridays: 9:00am-4:30pm, Saturdays-Sundays: closed. Typically, peer educators work 5-10 hours per week.
