About the role

Teach intermediate and advanced Spanish courses while developing curricular materials and coordinating proficiency assessments. Additionally, supervise dormitory operations and serve as a student advisor for high school and post-graduate students.

Salary: $100,790 to $126,088 year

Spanish Instructor (Trustees of Phillips Academy; Andover, MA)

  • Phillips Academy is a co-educational, non-profit, independent secondary school for boarding and day students in grades 9–12, along with a post-graduate year. Therefore, the Spanish Instructor role will be teaching at the secondary/high school level. The post-graduate program is available to recent high school graduates who have not yet started college or university. The course offerings and all associated tasks/duties related to courses offered through the post-graduate program are the same as the standard 9-12 course offerings.

  • Multimedia: Approaches to the Hispanic World; Developing curricular materials for Spanish language instruction; Convening with the SPA 300 faculty to review the curriculum, examining proficiency assessments as a section coordinator; Supervising, with a faculty team, the day-to-day operations of one of our dorms and facilitate integrative in-campus and off-campus cultural learning activities designed to foster academics, social, and personal growth for the residents;
  • Acting as a

  • Advisor, which involves: meeting each advisee individually and in a group, oversee their course selection, level changes, and course load management, and contact their parents/guardians, and if necessary, serve as a Spanish to English interpreter/translator in these conversations; and Residing in campus-provided housing in Andover, MA.

Minimum requirements

Master’s degree or equivalent in Spanish and Latin American Studies or a related field plus 3 years of teaching experience.

Must have

Demonstrated experience with teaching and pedagogy. Demonstrated subject matter knowledge. Effective communication skills with both students and adults. Ability to create and maintain a positive classroom environment. Ability to teach up and down the curriculum from 9th to 12th grades. Ability to create safe and welcoming residential environment for 9th to 12th graders. Be able to contribute meaningfully and enthusiastically to community service projects in neighboring, predominantly Latino communities. Ability to organize and lead intramural competitions, with particular skill and interest in recreational basketball. Ability to participate effectively in key committees. Must be fluent in Spanish.
