About the role

The Assistant Group Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of children while implementing daily program activities. This includes planning activities that promote development and maintaining effective communication with children, parents, and staff.

Position summary

Under the guidance of the Child Care Director, the Assistant Group Supervisor helps implement daily program activities, aligning with the YMCA’s goals and Pennsylvania State Department of Public Welfare regulations.

This role involves treating everyone with respect, integrity, and courtesy; communicating clearly and pleasantly; embracing diversity; being eager to learn and grow; accepting constructive feedback; and working well in a team. This position ensures the YMCA's mission, purpose, image, and core values are consistently upheld.

Essential functions

1. Ensuring the safety and well-being of children at all times by properly supervising them, while implementing emergency procedures and risk management at all times.

2. Interact positively with children daily, upholding YMCA core values.

3. Planning and executing activities that promote physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development, while encouraging positive behavior, helping children develop social skills, and enhancing language skills through reading and conversation.

4. Create high-quality lesson plans and carry out weekly lesson plans.

5. Complete documentation/assessments in-regards to evaluating enrolled children in the classroom. Interact positively with the children daily, consistently displaying the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all program activities.

6. Carry out specific tasks for the daily operation of the child care site, including administering small group activities, preparing arts and crafts, serving meals, and implementing positive discipline strategies. Assist in reviewing daily attendance records and documenting information for accurate billing.

7. Following and enforcing all YMCA childcare policies and procedures related to health and safety. Administering basic first aid if necessary and reporting any accidents or injuries.

8. Demonstrate effective communication with supervisors, staff, students, and parents.

9. Keep the program area tidy and ensure supplies, equipment, and materials are of high quality. Perform light maintenance tasks such as sweeping, mopping, cleaning tables and chairs, and taking out the trash. Assist with meal preparation and some kitchen duties.

10.Complete all YMCA-required training, attend mandatory meetings, and document children's attendance and incidents per state requirements.

11.Participating in training and professional development opportunities to stay updated with best practices in early childhood education.

12.Collaborating with colleagues to share ideas and strategies for improving the childcare program.

13.Collaborate with the teacher’s aide and supervisors to ensure a high-quality program for enrolled children.

14.Be ready to assist in other classrooms as needed. Ensure the program is running according to the established daily schedule and structure.

15.Work collaboratively with child care staff, maintaining professionalism, alertness, and eliminating unsafe practices.

16.Complete additional assignments and responsibilities as directed by the supervisor and/or CEO.

Qualifications

In accordance with the Pennsylvania State Department of Public Welfare, the Assistant Group Supervisor must be 18 years of age and possess, at minimum, a high school diploma or general education diploma and two years’ experience working with children. Ideal candidates understand the nature and purpose of the YMCA and the respective roles of volunteers and staff, and have the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community; a track record of building authentic, constructive relationships with others. Prior to the start of employment, documentation of state clearances and completed physical/TB Test must be on-file.

Hours of position

This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position.
