AY2627 Classroom Aide - Literacy Pittsburgh (Work-Study Required)

This position is a community service work-study position off campus and is paid at $15/hour.

Literacy Pittsburgh invites intern applicants for the Fall 2026 semester.

Interns at Literacy Pittsburgh support the agency mission of “Better Lives Through Learning” by serving students with goals of improving their English, reading, writing, and math skills.

Interns make a meaningful impact while building professional skills as they work with a diverse range of adult students and colleagues, develop lesson plans and materials, and gain instructional experience through one-on-one and small-group instruction.

Literacy Intern The intern will be matched to teach, tutor, or serve as a classroom aide for students from our English Language Learning (ELL), adult basic education (reading, writing, and math), and/or GED/High School Equivalency (HSE) programs.

In addition to instruction, intern responsibilities include lesson planning/prep, administrative tasks (e.g., reporting on attendance and student progress), and completing training/professional development related to the role.

Interns may also choose a focus area in addition to teaching, planning, and administrative duties in alignment with agency needs and individual interests.

The desired intern will work with the manager of our intern program to work out the details of the internship including the specific schedule and responsibilities.

Candidate Requirements: Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Must be currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Demonstrated commitment to Literacy Pittsburgh’s values.

Attends training provided by Literacy Pittsburgh.

Past experience with teaching and/or working with diverse populations a plus.

Compensation, Timeline, and Schedule

  • $15/hour for 10 hours/week for up to 150 hours total Internship starts around the week of 8/24/26 and concludes by 12/22/26. Literacy Pittsburgh classes typically meet either on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday each week for two hours each class session. Classes are offered in the morning (e.g., 10am-12pm), afternoon (e.g., 1-3pm), or evening (e.g., 5:30-7:30pm). Classes may be online or in-person (typically at our Downtown Center location). Intern availability should ideally be able to accommodate class times within this framework.

Requirements

Candidates must be authorized to work in the US and currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree. Experience working with diverse populations or teaching is considered a plus.
