About the role

Are you passionate about helping adult learners build confidence and opportunity through English language acquisition? The College of Western Idaho (CWI) is seeking an English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor to provide engaging, student-centered instruction that supports learners in developing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills for success in life, work, and further education.

In this role, you’ll create a supportive learning environment, deliver meaningful instruction, and help students achieve educational and personal goals while contributing to CWI’s mission of transforming lives through education.

** This is an evening position

  • Tuesdays and
  • Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Teaching & instructional excellence

  • Deliver English as a Second Language instruction in speaking, listening, reading, and writing
  • Implement Life and Work Skills curriculum and other assigned instructional content
  • Develop and utilize lesson plans that support language acquisition and student learning outcomes
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment for adult learners
  • Adapt instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs and learning styles of students

Student success & engagement

  • Support student retention through engagement, outreach, and established student contact practices
  • Monitor and assess student progress toward educational outcomes
  • Collaborate with supervisors and fellow instructors to ensure instruction aligns with program goals and student needs
  • Encourage learner persistence and achievement through ongoing feedback and support

Assessment, records & program support

  • Record attendance and track student performance and outcomes
  • Assist with assessment activities and reporting requirements tied to state and federal funding guidelines
  • Support orientation, intake, registration, and testing activities as needed
  • Maintain accurate documentation and follow program policies and procedures

Collaboration & professional development

  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development activities as assigned
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to support continuous program improvement
  • Stay current with instructional strategies, educational technology, and adult learning best practices
  • Convey by words and actions the values expected by CWI
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Work environment & schedule

Evening position:

  • Tuesdays and
  • Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Class schedules, meeting frequency, and instructional assignments may vary based on program needs
  • Generally, one hour of preparation time is paid for every two-hour class

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Basic computer proficiency and experience using educational technology
  • Ability to create engaging lesson plans and deliver effective instruction to adult learners
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills
  • Commitment to supporting diverse student populations and promoting student success

Preferred Qualifications

  • Classroom and online teaching experience
  • Experience teaching adults in a Life and Work Skills ESL program
  • TESOL Certification
  • Master’s degree in ESL, TESOL, Adult Education, or a closely related field
  • Experience teaching adult English language learners with emerging literacy skills
  • Experience learning or using a foreign language
  • Experience working with multicultural and multilingual populations

Additional instructions for applicants

Most positions at CWI are in-person and based on campus. While some roles may allow up to two remote workdays per week, eligibility for remote work is determined on a case-by-case basis at the hiring manager's discretion. All candidates must reside within, or be willing to relocate to, a reasonable commuting distance from CWI. Employment visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Requirements
