About the role

Provide academic skills support and individualized advising to medical students to improve academic performance and board examination outcomes. Develop and deliver workshops on study strategies and coordinate the Osteopathic Medical Scholars Program.

The University of Pikeville is seeking an Educational Support Specialist for the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM) Office of Student Affairs and Academic Excellence. This position provides academic skills support and academic advising services to medical students.

The Educational Support Specialist offers training, advising, and individualized support in areas such as adult learning, remediation, academic enhancement, time management, knowledge organization, study strategies, and test preparation.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with students to assess their academic needs and develop individualized study plans addressing learning strategies, time management, study skills, knowledge organization, and test preparation. Meet regularly with academically at-risk students to develop strategies designed to improve academic performance and board examination outcomes. Facilitate programs that support academic success, student retention, and individualized student support throughout the medical school curriculum. Maintain a reliable schedule of office hours for scheduled appointments and drop-in student advising and consultations. Provide occasional evening or weekend support for departmental programs and initiatives, as needed. Develop and deliver group presentations and workshops on academic success, study strategies, test preparation, time management, and other relevant topics. Assist with the coordination and management of the Osteopathic Medical Scholars Program (OMSP) for undergraduate students. Remain knowledgeable about current trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in health care education. Collaborate with faculty and administrators to identify opportunities to promote student learning and academic success. Refer students to appropriate internal and external resources, including disability services, mental health services, career advising, and medical consultation, as appropriate. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education Required

Master’s degree in education, counseling, student affairs, or a related field; or Bachelor’s degree in a related field with at least two years of relevant professional experience.

Experience & Abilities

Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse populations. Experience using computerized systems and student information platforms. Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively and contribute to a team-oriented environment. Strong oral and written communication skills. Understanding of standardized examinations applicable to osteopathic medical students. Experience developing and facilitating educational workshops or presentations. High level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, discretion, and personal accountability. Understanding of applicable federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to students. Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive student and academic information. Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and priorities.
