This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy mentoring, teaching, and encouraging students—while working a flexible schedule in a supportive, mission-driven environment.

Expected Hours

6 hours/week (Tue/Thu, 9 AM – 12:00 pm).

Location

Rio Vista High School (RVHS) Additional opportunities to work on field trips and online tutoring as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

An associate’s degree The ability to lead groups and facilitate workshops or interactive learning sessions. Comfort with STEM concepts Previous experience in TRIO, youth development, or coaching. Knowledge of FAFSA, Apply Texas, and scholarship applications. Personal background as a first-generation or low-income college student.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for the College Access Advisor position, candidates must meet the following criteria: Completion of post-secondary coursework or a degree (Associate’s or higher) from an accredited institution. Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to reliable personal transportation to travel between designated school sites. Demonstrated interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and school administrators. Ability to mentor youth, manage group behaviors, and establish clear, professional boundaries in a school setting.

  • Generally, advisors are responsible for providing college readiness services, character development, and academic support.
  • Specific focus areas for this role include: Lead the Open STEM Space at Rio Vista High School.
  • This includes encouraging student inquiry, supervising hands-on projects, and maintaining an environment that fosters technical curiosity and problem-solving.
  • Serve as a consistent tutor and mentor for students.
  • Use the Socratic method to provide academic support while building professional, goal-oriented relationships that focus on graduation and college enrollment.
  • Address issues related to college readiness, including navigation of the college system, the application process, financial aid, and avoiding common college pitfalls.
  • Monitor and respond to student behavior during program hours and field trips, maintaining strong professional boundaries while addressing character issues that affect student success.
  • Assist with administrative operations, including contacting students, writing encouraging notes, and organizing STEM supplies and computer equipment.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs., to stand and walk for long periods of time, to endure strong heat and cold, to climb stairs, and to fly on an airplane. Must be able to project voice and speak publicly. Must be able to drive a vehicle, read road signs, judge distance, and spend extensive hours in front of a computer screen.
