  • SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Provides operational support to the Afterschool program by assisting counselors and program staff with supervision, movement and accountability of children throughout the program. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall experience.

  • FUNCTIONS: Assists with the daily operation of the afterschool program by providing support to counselors and program staff. Safely escorts children throughout the YMCA for scheduled activities, such as swim lessons. Coordinates the safe pickup and dismissal of children from designated locations throughout the building. Assists with the preparation, service, and cleanup of daily snacks while following YMCA food safety procedures. Maintains accurate attendance and ensures children are accounted for during all transitions. Provides direct supervision of children during transitions and assists with minor behavior management using positive guidance techniques. Assists in maintaining a safe, clean, and organized program environment. Responds appropriately to emergencies and follows all YMCA policies and procedures related to child safety, medical situations, behavior management, child abuse prevention, and emergency response. Builds positive relationships with children, parents, and staff while modeling the YMCA's core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Assists with setting up and cleaning up program areas and materials as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS: Minimum age of 16. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with children, parents, and colleagues. Patience, empathy, and enthusiasm for working with children of diverse backgrounds and abilities. Availability to work flexible hours, including afternoons and evenings, as suits the program requirements. Previous experience working with children in a childcare, educational, or recreational setting preferred.

Certifications required within 60 days of employment: CPR, First Aid, AED, Oxygen.

Ability to complete the following within 30 days of hire: Child Abuse Prevention training; Bloodborne Pathogens and Sexual Harassment training. Passion for the YMCA mission and commitment to serving the community.

Physical

DEMANDS: Must be able to perform all physical requirements of the position; including walking, standing, bending, reaching and lifting up to 50 lbs. at a time. Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.

Requirements

Candidates must be at least 16 years old and possess strong interpersonal skills with a passion for working with children. Applicants should be able to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 lbs and must obtain required safety certifications within 60 days of hire.
