About the role

The teacher will develop and deliver hands-on economics lessons that promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. They are also responsible for maintaining accurate grades, supporting student social-emotional development, and contributing to an inclusive school community.

Part-time Economics Teacher

Westtown School seeks a part-time Upper School Economics Teacher to join our faculty in August 2026. The Part-time Economics Teacher will teach one to two economics classes each semester.

Westtown School is an independent Quaker, Pre-K–12 day and boarding school located on a 600-acre campus in West Chester, PA, approximately 30 miles west of Philadelphia. Guided by Quaker values, Westtown School inspires and prepares our students to become stewards and leaders of a better world.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Develops lessons and hands-on learning activities that promote problem-solving, creative and critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication skills while encouraging risk-taking in learning;

Actively involves students in the classroom through group work, project-based learning, exploration, questioning, discussion, and other cooperative teaching techniques;

Communicates effectively with all constituents – colleagues, administrators, parents, and students and maintains accurate and up-to-date assignments and grades;

Helps students hone the essential skills of critical thinking, communication, and empathy, and empowers them to draw out those skills in other people;

Supports students’ social-emotional and identity development;

Contributes to building and sustaining an inclusive school community and a program that embodies diverse cultures and perspectives;

Integrates technology seamlessly into teaching strategies and practices, including the use of a learning management system;

Contributes to students’ development of Quaker values;

Engages in decision-making aligned with Quaker process in service to the school community;

Enthusiastically seeks out and participates in both school-sponsored and self-selected professional development opportunities to grow as an instructional leader and community member.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related subject is required; advanced degree preferred;
  • 3-5 years of relevant teaching experience and an understanding of adolescent development;
  • Coaching experience and an interest in participating in the athletics program in addition to teaching are a plus;
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace and learning management systems such as Canvas, and the ability to incorporate technology effectively into instructional practices;
  • Demonstrated commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community based on cultural competence, commitment to social justice, and respect for all voices;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to build meaningful relationships with students throughout our diverse community;
  • Alignment with Westtown School’s mission and an educational philosophy consistent with the school’s Quaker values.
