About the role

The adjunct faculty member will deliver high-quality ESL instruction through both in-person and online formats while managing course materials and student assessments. Responsibilities also include maintaining academic records, providing student advising, and participating in departmental meetings and professional development.

Job summary

Kentucky State University seeks qualified part-time/adjunct faculty to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) courses on an as-needed basis. Adjunct faculty provide high-quality instruction to students with varying levels of English proficiency through online and/or in-person course delivery. Responsibilities include course preparation, classroom instruction, student assessment, academic advising related to course success, maintenance of academic records, and compliance with university academic policies and procedures. Adjunct faculty support the University's mission by fostering student engagement, language acquisition, and academic success in a collaborative learning environment.

Essential job functions

Teach assigned English as a Second Language (ESL) courses in person and/or online, as assigned, using instructional methods appropriate for the course delivery format.

Prepare, organize, and deliver instructional materials that support approved course objectives and student learning outcomes.

Develop and adapt lesson plans, instructional activities, and assessments that address varying levels of English language proficiency.

Provide students with an approved course syllabus outlining learning objectives, instructional methods, attendance expectations, required course materials, assignments, grading criteria, and academic policies.

Assess student learning through assignments, examinations, presentations, projects, and other appropriate evaluation methods, and provide timely and constructive feedback.

Utilize Canvas and other university instructional technologies to manage course materials, assignments, grades, attendance, communication, and student engagement.

Maintain accurate attendance records, grades, and other academic records in accordance with university policies and established deadlines.

Submit final grades, attendance verification, and other required academic documentation within established university timelines.

Maintain scheduled office hours or student availability as required by the department.

Create and maintain a professional, respectful, and supportive learning environment that promotes student participation, academic integrity, and student success.

Provide academic guidance and support to students regarding course expectations, language development, and available university resources.

Communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and administrators regarding instructional and academic matters.

Maintain the confidentiality of student education records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), university policy, and applicable federal and state laws.

Participate in required orientations, departmental meetings, professional development activities, and training sessions as assigned.

Support the University's international education mission by promoting English language acquisition and academic success for multilingual learners.

Comply with all university policies, procedures, accreditation standards, and applicable federal and state regulations.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Knowledge of English as a Second Language (ESL) instructional methodologies and second language acquisition principles.
  • Knowledge of current instructional practices, curriculum development, and student assessment techniques.
  • Knowledge of online instructional strategies and learning management systems, preferably Canvas.
  • Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the appropriate handling of confidential student information.
  • Ability to effectively teach students with varying English language proficiency levels.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Ability to create an engaging, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment.
  • Ability to integrate instructional technology into classroom and online instruction.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to adapt instructional strategies to meet diverse student learning needs.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative academic environment.

Qualifications

Minimum

A Master’s degree from an accredited institution in TESOL, TESL, Applied Linguistics, English, Education, or a closely related field with appropriate graduate coursework in English as a Second Language instruction.

At least one (1) year of experience teaching English language learners in higher education, adult education, or a comparable instructional setting.

Experience teaching students with varying English language proficiency levels.

Experience using instructional technology and learning management systems.

Preferred

Experience teaching online using Canvas or a comparable learning management system.

Experience working with international students or multilingual learners.

Experience developing ESL curriculum and instructional materials.

Experience in higher education.

Supervisory responsibility

• This position does not have any supervisory responsibility.

Working conditions

Work is performed in classroom, office, and/or online instructional environments.

Requires prolonged periods of standing, sitting, presenting instructional material, and using computers and standard office equipment.

Requires frequent interaction with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.

May require occasional evening or weekend instruction based on assigned course schedules.

Requires the ability to communicate effectively in person and through virtual instructional platforms.
