About the role

The instructor is responsible for creating a safe, inclusive, and fun environment while providing sports instruction and maintaining order during games. They must also manage equipment, keep accurate scores, and communicate effectively with coaches, players, and parents.

Position Summary

Creates a safe and positive atmosphere for participants to learn to play sports. Promotes character development, safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Essential Functions: 1. Responsible for communicating with coaches, players, and helps maintain order and creating a safe, inclusive and fun environment. 2. Responsible for ensuring that participates are on the team roster and if applicable in uniform. 3. Ensure all rules including participant, Parent Code of Conduct, Coaches Contract and posted rules are followed. Responsible for informing referee/coaches of any penalties/improper substitutions. 4. When score keeping, complete score sheet including the final score of the game. 5. Monitor and track YMCA sports equipment, making sure items are turned in at the end of the game or event. 6. Responsible to prepare site prior to start of game or event, preparation includes but not limited to cleaning the area, and making necessary preparation for planned activity. 7. Must show emotional maturity by controlling frustrations and diffusing situations where others feels tension or stress. Show positive attitude toward the game and all its participants. 8. Report any unusual incidents to the Program Director (i.e. altercations between players, officials, parents or injuries). 9. If working in a sports instructor role, provide sports instruction in a planned and age-appropriate way. 10. Follow and enforce safety standards, policies and procedures. 11. Attend all staff meetings, trainings and other YMCA functions as required by Supervisor. 12. Maintain open lines of communication with participant, coaches, referee, staff and supervisor. 13. Qualifications

1. Must be at least 16 years of age, over 18 years of age preferred. 2. Must be currently attending high school or equivalent, or have a high school diploma or equivalent. 3. First Aid, CPR, and AED are required and must be maintained and kept in current status. 4. Live scan fingerprints Clearance 5. Health screening w/Neg TB and Neg Drug Test Screening. 6. Complete all online required training(s). 7. Strong communication skills. 8. Public relations skills and/or experience working with a diverse population desired. 9. Sports background and/or organized sport involvement required. Working Conditions: Environmental Factors: Indoor and outdoor facilities (e.g. gymnasium and recreational sites); exposure to heat, cold, potentially hazardous chemicals, toxic materials; work on slippery or uneven surfaces. Noise level is usually moderate. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee frequently is required to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Requirements

Candidates must be at least 16 years old, currently attending or having completed high school, and possess current First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications. A background in sports and strong communication skills are required, along with the ability to pass health and background screenings.
