  • Schedule: Follows the class and school schedule General Summary All operations at The International School are based on the school's mission, core values and vision as well as the philosophies of the International Baccalaureate's Primary Years Program (PYP). As a faculty member of The International School you are expected to read, promote, support and act in accordance with these elements. It is also expected that faculty members actively integrate the IB Learner Profile into all aspects of their workday and model the profile through their own behavior. The values, philosophies and expectations of The International School's mission, vision and PYP standing are integrated into the specific job responsibilities for this position. Below are the job responsibility areas which the teacher assistant is expected to fulfill. Essential Functions Before and After Care Arrive on time and be ready to work according to assigned daily schedule to include before and after care duties Follow before and aftercare procedures accurately and in a timely manner Be at check-in location on time for before care duty and have location set up with check-in log Accurately record check-in times for students arriving at before care Ensure student is delivered to their classroom in a timely manner Ensure students are monitored at all times during before and after care Deliver completed check-in log to designated location in a timely manner Ensure that students are delivered to their parent or authorized pick up person 100% of the time during pick up or aftercare Responsible when aftercare is complete to return to classroom to finish duties according to your schedule Classroom Management and Safety Assist the Teacher with the implementation of The International School's PYP IB curriculum. Read understand and utilize The International School's Student Discipline Philosophy and Procedures Assume responsibility for knowing the location of all students under his/her charge during the periods in which he/she is assigned to provide care and/or instruction Provide a safe environment according to TIS safety procedures for all students under his/her charge and notify the Teacher first then Head of School, Head of Early Childhood or Facilities Manager when unsafe conditions exist Transport students to and from specialist classes in a safe, timely and orderly fashion and assist Specialist Teachers during specialist class periods Responsible for contacting a substitute when needed according to the substitute policy Responsible for attending excursions and incursions and assisting the Teacher with assigned duties Responsible for maintaining an organized, safe and clean classroom environment Actively monitor students at all times especially during students' lunch and/or recesses according to safety policies Read, understand and follow the policies and procedures of The International School's employee handbook, safety policies and procedure manuals Understand, follow and implement the rules and regulations of the Oregon Child Care Division pertaining to the level of students under the Assistant's charge. Provide care and instruction in compliance with those rules and regulations Communication Collaborate with the Teacher, Specialists or Volunteer(s) assigned to his/her classroom Communicate with the Teacher, Volunteer(s), and Floating Assistants with regards to student needs and other relevant information (e.g. notification of allergies, authorized pick up people, etc) Follow International School of Portland's communication policies and procedure for all communications Responsible for checking mailbox and International School of Portland's email account, ensuring that the computer is not used when students are in the classroom unless it is used for instructional purposes Responsible for responding to emails within 48 hours Follow the weekly classroom schedule established by the International School of Portland Follow the school calendar established by the International School of Portland Conduct yourself at all times in an appropriate and professional manner Attend all required meetings such as, professional development, or as faculty meetings as needed occasionally Responsible for additional duties as assigned by the Teacher, Head of School or Head of Early Childhood

Passionate about and able to fulfill the mission and vision of the school Commitment to the values and traits of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program and Learner profile as well as the ability to demonstrate these values while teaching and working Self-motivated, proactive, resourceful and creative problem solver Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines Dedicated to meeting the needs of diverse student learners Participation in staff collaboration events and training opportunities The willingness to implement educational best practices as directed by the Head of School /Head of Early Childhood and/or PYP coordinator Collaborative team player who can work together with students, faculty colleagues, the administrative team, parents/community, and work independently Ability to follow school policies and procedures to ensure a smooth and safe classroom and working environment Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, orally and in writing, with a broad range of internal and external constituents Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse pool of personalities Comfortable in an international community with experience living and/or traveling overseas and studying other languages Comfortable proactively learning new technology and integrating technology into the classroom to increase learning Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) Experience with Google Suite (gmail, google docs, google calendar) Proficient using a Mac operating system Proficient skills utilizing online database software such as Achieve and ADP. Working Conditions/Physical Requirements During peak activity periods, this position may require working in excess of 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week. Capable of quickly traveling to multiple locations on school campus including up and down hills, lifting or otherwise carrying 40 pounds, traveling up/down flights of stairs, standing and sitting for long durations, occasionally typing on a computer keyboard, and frequently reading information on a computer screen. Ability to handle the physical demands of working with children ages three through twelve Ability to travel occasionally to attend off-site events Required Qualifications 6 months -3 years experience working with Early Childhood or Elementary age children Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English Native level fluency in the target language along with demonstrated ability to support teaching the target language

Preferred Qualifications

At least 1 year of professional teaching experience in a language immersion classroom Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Teaching/Education Master's degree in Early Childhood Teaching/Education Certification for teaching target language Previous PYP experience or training

Requirements

Candidates must have 6 months to 3 years of experience working with children and native-level fluency in the target language. A bachelor's or master's degree in early childhood education is preferred, along with previous experience in language immersion settings.
