Position Summary

The Learning & Development Specialist supports the design, development, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of education and workforce development programs with a primary focus on Emergency Department education in a Level II trauma center environment. This role partners closely with Emergency Department leadership, clinical educators, preceptors, physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing teams, ancillary departments, quality, regulatory, and information systems partners to identify learning needs and develop practical, role-specific education that strengthens emergency care delivery, trauma readiness, patient throughput, documentation accuracy, regulatory compliance, and patient safety. The Specialist supports orientation, onboarding, competency validation, continuing education, simulation-based training, and workflow education for Emergency Department team members, including education related to Epic ASAP workflows, emergency department documentation, triage, orders, discharge processes, patient movement, communication tools, and other key clinical system functions. Epic ASAP certification is preferred; demonstrated experience as an Epic ASAP super user, trainer, implementation participant, or highly proficient Emergency Department end user may be considered. Essential Position Responsibilities Design, develop, implement, and evaluate Emergency Department education programs that support safe, efficient, and evidence-based care in a Level II trauma center environment. Partner with Emergency Department leadership, clinical educators, preceptors, trauma program leaders, quality, regulatory, information systems, and operational stakeholders to assess learning needs and translate priorities into effective education plans. Develop curriculum, lesson plans, facilitator guides, participant materials, competency tools, skills checklists, simulations, job aids, and assessments related to Emergency Department clinical practice, trauma readiness, regulatory expectations, and departmental workflows. Support orientation, onboarding, annual education, continuing education, competency validation, and professional development for Emergency Department team members, including nurses, technicians, paramedics, unit support staff, and other assigned roles. Provide education and support for Epic ASAP workflows, including triage documentation, ED narrator or equivalent documentation tools, orders, results review, medication administration documentation, patient tracking, disposition, discharge, transfer, handoff communication, and downtime workflows as applicable. Serve as a knowledgeable resource for Epic ASAP-related education by collaborating with Epic analysts, informatics, clinical operations, and frontline end users to support workflow adoption, documentation accuracy, and continuous improvement. Utilize an interdisciplinary simulation center within the education department to develop and facilitate trauma, stroke, STEMI, sepsis, behavioral health, pediatric emergency, mass casualty, patient deterioration, team communication, and other emergency care simulation scenarios. Support student clinical rotations and approved Emergency Department learning experiences as assigned, including coordination with academic partners, department leaders, preceptors, and designated education team members. Serve as an American Heart Association instructor, as applicable, supporting basic life support and other approved AHA courses in accordance with current course standards and training center requirements. Facilitate classroom, virtual, blended, simulation, skills-based, and on-the-job learning experiences using adult learning principles, realistic Emergency Department scenarios, and appropriate instructional technologies. Collaborate with interdisciplinary partners to ensure educational content is accurate, current, role-specific, and aligned with organizational policy, clinical standards, trauma center expectations, regulatory requirements, Epic workflows, and best practices. Evaluate training effectiveness through participant feedback, knowledge checks, competency outcomes, documentation audits, performance data, quality indicators, and stakeholder input; recommend improvements to strengthen learning impact and sustainment. Maintain accurate education records, course materials, instructor documentation, competency records, Epic-related training materials, and other learning documentation in accordance with organizational requirements. Perform other learning and development duties as assigned to support Emergency Department readiness, workforce capability, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement. Qualifications Education: Graduate of an accredited clinical program required, preferably in registered nursing, emergency medical services, paramedic practice, respiratory therapy, or another healthcare discipline with direct Emergency Department relevance. Associate degree required; bachelor’s degree in nursing, healthcare, education, organizational development, instructional design, or a related field preferred. Licensure and Certifications: Current professional license, registration, or certification required when applicable to the candidate’s clinical discipline. Current Arkansas licensure or eligibility for Arkansas licensure required for licensed clinical roles. Epic ASAP certification preferred. In lieu of Epic ASAP certification, demonstrated experience as an Epic ASAP super user, trainer, implementation participant, or highly proficient Emergency Department end user may be considered. American Heart Association instructor status required or must be obtained within an organizationally defined timeframe, as assigned. Additional emergency, trauma, pediatric, simulation, education, or specialty certifications preferred, such as BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ENPC, CEN, or equivalent certifications as applicable to role and discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum of three years of recent Emergency Department clinical experience preferred, with experience in a trauma center, high-acuity emergency department, or complex acute care environment strongly preferred. Prior experience in staff education, precepting, clinical training, competency validation, simulation-based education, Epic ASAP workflow support, super user responsibilities, onboarding, curriculum development, or learning management systems preferred.

  • Environment: This position will spend time in classroom, simulation, clinical, non-clinical, and standard office environments. The role may require walking, standing, sitting, presenting, transporting training supplies or equipment, and occasional pushing, pulling, lifting, and/or carrying up to 50 lbs. This position may require travel between healthcare system locations and may occasionally be exposed to clinical environments, communicable diseases, bodily fluids, sharps, and other risks associated with healthcare settings. Candidates must have a degree in a clinical discipline and at least three years of recent Emergency Department experience. Proficiency in Epic ASAP and experience in staff education or simulation-based training are strongly preferred.
