Position Title: 2026-2027 AY Assistant Coach, Men’s Basketball (2 Positions) – Full-Time

Coaching Assistant – Academic Year (2384)

Position Details

The Athletics Department at Cal State LA is seeking applications for two full-time Assistant Coach positions for the Men’s Basketball program for the 2026-2027 academic year. Under the direction of the Head Coach, the Assistant Coach will assist with all aspects of an NCAA Division II intercollegiate basketball program competing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), including practice planning, player development, game preparation, recruiting, video analysis, academic support, team travel, compliance responsibilities, and administrative operations. The Assistant Coach supports the mission and values of Cal State LA Athletics and promotes student-athlete success, equity, inclusion, and sportsmanship.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of NCAA Rules - This position requires a strong working knowledge and understanding of all NCAA rules and regulations regarding compliance issues.
  • Ability to instruct and develop student-athletes in a competitive collegiate basketball environment.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with video analysis software, scouting preparation, and basketball operations.
  • Commitment to student-athlete academic success, equity, inclusion, and personal development.

Major Job Duties (Essential Functions)

  • Assist in developing and implementing team and individual strategies through on-court instruction, player development, and video analysis to maximize competitive success.
  • Provide instruction and mentorship to student-athletes to enhance athletic performance, teamwork, leadership, and personal development.
  • Assist the Head Coach with practice planning, game preparation, and strategy, recruiting efforts, program logistics, and daily operations.
  • Support the academic success, retention, and overall well-being of student-athletes.
  • Promote positive engagement with the university and community through community outreach initiatives and program representation.
  • Maintain compliance with NCAA, conference, and university policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and demonstrated coaching experience in athletics, physical education, kinesiology, or a related field. Must possess or obtain CPR/AED and First Aid certification upon hire. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and meet university driver authorization requirements throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Collegiate coaching or playing experience at the NCAA, NAIA, or high school level. Demonstrated success recruiting prospective student-athletes and familiarity with NCAA recruiting practices.

Position requires evening, weekend, holiday, and overnight travel for recruiting and competition. Duties may include demonstrating athletic techniques, transporting equipment, and working in office, gymnasium, outdoor, and travel environments.

Salary

Initial Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The salary schedule information for the faculty lecturer: Academic Year-month Classification is available based on the following ranges: (per salary schedule 7/1/2024)

The certification must translate the information in English, and confirm that your highest terminal degree is US Equivalent to a US terminal degree (i.e., Master’s, Doctorate’s, Doctor’s of Philosophy).
