- The Athletic Trainer will collaborate with South Lewis Central School for 10 months of the academic school year (approximately mid-August – mid June). The Athletic Trainer is responsible for athletic training including all aspects of preventing, evaluating, treating, and rehabilitating injuries sustained by students participating on athletic teams. The work involves responsibility for assisting coaches in the development and presentation of first aide training and implementation, providing instruction to athletes on the prevention of injuries.

The work involves responsibility for assisting coaches in the development and presentation of first aid training and implementation, providing instruction to athletes on the prevention of injuries. For two months of the academic year (approximately mid-June – mid August) the Athletic Trainer, under the supervision of the Director of Rehabilitation and the Orthopedic Physician Assistant, will assist in outpatient clinical services and will address pediatrics, adolescent, adult and or geriatric patients in conjunction with sports medicine and injury evaluation. An employee in this class is responsible for rendering first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or other emergency measures when needed due to athletic injuries. The Athletic Trainer will oversee the fitness center including scheduling employees, budget preparation and equipment replacement plan. A flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends is required. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Provide athletic training coverage for all home in-season/post-season athletic contests, including: pre-game preparation and treatments, in-game athletic training coverage, and post-game evaluations/treatments (as needed); Maintain athletic training room hours during primary practice times to meet the needs of athletic teams as well as hours for rehabilitation during the week and weekends as needed; Evaluation/treatment of students participating on athletic teams, including initial injury care, referral to the appropriate medical professionals, taping/wrapping the athletes, as needed; Provides instruction to coaches and athletes regarding prevention of athletic injuries; Maintain accurate medical records for all athletes that are treated/evaluated, including those seen by off-campus medical professionals; use this documentation to analyze injury trends; Prepares student accident reports and provides daily injury reports to coaches; Coordinates rehabilitation efforts of student athletes; Assist athletic director/coaching staff with the development of risk management plans for the athletic teams, including pre-season training/conditioning programs and off-season treatment, rehabilitation, and conditioning plans; Recommends to student athletes how to relieve soreness, strains and bruises; Complete all administrative functions required in the athletic training room including supply inventory and managing the athletic training budget; Offer and teach first aid/CPR/AED certification courses for all coaches; Maintain and stock medical kits for each athletic team; Travel to away contests at the discretion of the Director of Athletics; Renders first aide, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), cleaning and bandaging of wounds, applying heat or cold to promote healing; Administers preventative taping, bandaging, and wrapping; Applies, fits and adjusts protective equipment and instructs coaches and athletes as to the methods of same; Assists in the coordination of medical examination for student athletes including: perform baseline concussion testing maintaining clearance rosters/physical forms for all athletic teams; monitoring expiration dates of physicals and notifying athletic director/coaches of physicals that are set to expire updating athletic director/coaches every time there is a change to the clearance roster completing pre-physical portion of examination (health history, pulse, blood pressure, respirations, vision) arranging for follow-up care for student-athletes that are diagnosed with injuries/ illness during the physical examination Under the supervision of the Hospital’s Director of Rehabilitation and the Orthopedic Physician Assistant, will assist in outpatient clinical services and will address pediatrics, adolescent, adult and or geriatric patients in conjunction with sports medicine and injury evaluation. Attend all appropriate meetings and functions of the Athletic Director, Physical Education Department, the School Base Health Center Physician Assistant and the Hospital’s Rehabilitation Department and Orthopedic Practice. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology. Thorough knowledge of athletic conditioning techniques and procedures. Thorough knowledge of first aid procedures. Ability to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Ability to establish and maintain a productive working relationship with coaches, parents and athletes. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a regionally accredited New York State registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, health, recreation, sports medicine or a related field SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a current and valid Athletic Trainers Certificate (ATC) from the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA); or, completion of a course of study comparable to that required for certification by the NATA at time of appointment; or, possession of an active NYS Registration Certificate to practice as an Athletic Trainer. Certification in First Aid and CPR. Pay Range $28.84—$38.46 USD
