About the role

The Assistant Teacher supports the lead teacher in maintaining a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for young children. Responsibilities include assisting with educational activities, classroom organization, and monitoring student behavior to ensure developmental needs are met.

Job Overview

The Assistant Teacher will support the lead teacher in providing a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for young children. This role is responsible for assisting in planning, preparing, and delivering age-appropriate activities, maintaining classroom order, and ensuring the emotional and developmental needs of the children are met.

Individuals who enjoy working with young children, demonstrate patience, and maintain reliable attendance will thrive in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain NAEYC Accreditation Standards and practices.
  • Comply with the Department of Human Services (DHS) Child Care Licensing Hawaii Administrative Rules.
  • Work with individuals or small groups of children as directed by the lead teacher.
  • Assist the teacher in planning and implementing educational activities, lessons, and materials.
  • Assist in assessing and documenting student progress and behavior.
  • Assist with mealtime preparations and nap-time support.
  • Monitor student behavior and enforce school policies to promote a safe and respectful learning environment.
  • Communicate effectively with students, teachers, and parents to support learning objectives.
  • Help maintain classroom organization and cleanliness such as cleaning, sanitizing, toileting, and diapering, plus managing supplies and resources.
  • Conduct yourself in an appropriate manner when dealing with children, other staff or parents, or during school activities on or off campus.
  • Be sensitive and responsive to children's needs.
  • Use positive modeling and behavior management.
  • Follow school policies and procedures (maintain confidentiality).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Meet State of Hawaii Department of Human Services (DHS) qualification standards for Assistant Teacher
  • Has an early childhood education CDA or 2 years college and six months experience with preschool ages and 9 units Early Childhood Education.
  • Must meet state licensing requirements (Medical, TB, and criminal history clearance).
  • Able to lift up to 35 lbs.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.

Requirements

Candidates must meet Hawaii DHS qualification standards, including a CDA or 2 years of college with 9 units of Early Childhood Education and six months of experience. Additionally, applicants must hold CPR/First Aid certification and pass medical, TB, and criminal history clearances.
