The Head Coach is responsible for leading all aspects of the Varsity Golf Program, including instruction, practice planning, and competition management. They must also mentor student-athletes while ensuring compliance with school policies and athletic association regulations.
Position Type: Seasonal, Part-Time (Fall and Spring Seasons), Stipend Position Reports To Athletic Director Responsibilities The Head Coach is responsible for the overall leadership, organization, and development of the Varsity Golf Program across both fall and spring seasons. This includes planning practices, coordinating competitions, supervising athletes during matches, and promoting a culture of respect, discipline, and sportsmanship. The Head Coach is expected to ensure compliance with all Girard College policies and the rules and regulations of the Penn-Jersey Athletic Association (P.J.A.A.), the Metropolitan Philadelphia Athletic Association (M.P.A.A.), and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (P.I.A.A.). Required Skills Demonstrate advanced knowledge of golf instruction, swing fundamentals, course management, and match strategy. Develop and implement structured practice plans for both individual and team development. Teach rules, etiquette, scoring procedures, and pace-of-play expectations. Foster a culture of integrity, patience, discipline, and sportsmanship. Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents, and school personnel. Supervise and mentor assistant coaches and/or volunteer assistants. Organize player development opportunities and skill progression plans. Work collaboratively with athletic staff and school administrators. Lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds as needed. Required Duties Direct all aspects of the Varsity Golf Program (fall and spring seasons). Organize and conduct tryouts and player evaluations. Develop and implement practice plans focused on skill development and competition readiness. Schedule and manage matches in coordination with the Athletic Director. Supervise student-athletes during practices, matches, and travel. Teach scoring, rules, etiquette, and competitive match play formats. Monitor student-athletes’ academic progress, attendance, and conduct. Coordinate with golf courses and facilities for practices and competitions. Maintain and oversee all program equipment (clubs, bags, practice materials, etc.). Coordinate transportation and supervise student-athletes during travel. Maintain a valid driver’s license and comply with all school transportation policies. Ensure compliance with all athletic associations and school regulations. Communicate regularly with parents regarding schedules, expectations, and athlete development. Attend Athletic Department meetings as required. Complete end-of-season evaluations for both fall and spring seasons. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum of three (3) years of coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, club, or professional level (golf preferred). Strong knowledge of golf rules, etiquette, scoring formats, and player development. Completion of all required coaching education requirements by time of hire. Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to work effectively with student-athletes, families, faculty, and administrators. Commitment to academic, athletic, and personal development of student-athletes. Hours In-Season (Fall & Spring) The golf program operates across two seasons: fall and spring. Coaches are expected to be available for practices and matches during both seasons, including weekday afternoons and occasional weekends. Match schedules vary based on course availability and league scheduling. Off-Season Coaches are expected to support approved off-season skill development opportunities, clinics, or workouts with approval from the Athletic Director. Season Expectations Attend all preseason meetings and planning sessions. Conduct tryouts and player evaluations each season. Organize and supervise all practices and competitions. Attend all scheduled matches and post-season events if applicable. Coordinate equipment inventory and program needs. Submit end-of-season program evaluations for both fall and spring seasons. Maintain communication with Athletic Department regarding program progress and needs. Represent Girard College with professionalism at all times. Physical Requirements This position requires standing and walking for extended periods, carrying golf equipment, demonstrating golf techniques, and supervising student-athletes in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions.
