About the role

The teacher will design and implement a mathematics curriculum aligned with New York State standards while integrating technology and modifying materials for diverse learning needs. They are also responsible for monitoring student progress, maintaining family communication, and collaborating with staff to provide individualized support.

Position summary

The High School Math Teacher will design and implement the mathematics educational curriculum appropriate for high school students, using New York State Learning Standards to guide and encourage students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.

Primary duties

  • Create lesson and unit plans to teach students a subject, utilizing the state standards and curriculum.
  • Develop and implement a solid motivating curriculum for high school students.
  • Modify lesson plans and materials to make them suitable for students’ current learning levels.
  • Integrate technology into the classroom (Schoology and Google)
  • Develop teaching and learning materials for use in class, including lesson plans, exams and homework, homework and projects, and assignments that use all student skills.
  • Maintain relationships with families and legal guardians of students to keep them informed of their child’s progress.
  • Work with students individually to help them overcome specific learning challenges.
  • Supervise students outside of the classroom—for example, during recess, field trips, or school-related events.
  • Monitor and track student progress and issue grades.
  • Knowledge of IEPs and Career Transition Plan
  • Work collaboratively with other teachers and administrators, including related service providers, to provide individualized support for each student regularly.
  • Collaborate with other teachers to share best practices and provide meaningful feedback regularly
  • Support the school’s Strategic Planning initiatives with an emphasis on culture. Demonstrate a commitment to the school’s vision, purpose, and mission
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

Required skills and abilities

  • Ability and willingness to reflect and improve instructional practices
  • Compassionate and Passionate; Results-driven and goal oriented
  • Excellent classroom management skills. Provide positive behavior intervention with support
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills with colleagues, parents, and students
  • Knowledge of subject matter
  • American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency
  • Knowledge of child cognitive development and various learning styles
  • Prior knowledge of Thinking Maps and Schoology
  • Strong Google Suite skills preferred

Education and experience

  • Master’s degree in Deaf Education or related field.
  • New York State Teaching Certification
  • New York State Mathematics Certification
  • Prior experience working with deaf students strongly preferred

Security clearance

• Required clearances include medical clearance, fingerprinted by the NYC Board of Ed, SCR, and SEL clearance

Physical requirements

  • Must have the ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times
