Job Description

The COM Career Advisor serves as the liaison for career and residency placement for College of Osteopathic Medicine students, performing high-level career and residency advising.

Executes a wide range of duties, which include coordinating the needs of students, such as providing career counseling, specialty selection, residency application plan development, and conducting one-on-one meetings. Additionally, monitors residency placement outcomes and data, manages reporting, facilitates training, addresses information requests, and participates in match processes and events. Duties and Responsibilities

Provide direction, support, and guidance as well as serve as the primary resource to the COM students for the residency application process. Including the various components supporting the applicant, such as curriculum vitae, personal statements, and applications. Provide system support and training to members of faculty and leadership who serve as academic advisors. Provide quality career and residency counseling and ensure resources are available and accessible to COM students in years I-IV. Counseling can be accomplished through various formats, including but not limited to in-person and virtual individual meetings, small and large group presentations, and workshops that highlight key topics relevant to the pursuit of graduate medical education (GME). Maintain expertise in the residency application systems and residency match programs by actively enhancing knowledge by seeking out updates and changes. Implement and oversee Careers in Medicine (CiM) and Big Interview Medical (BIM) access, training, and usage; integrating CiM assessments and BIM into the career counseling process. Actively engage with student specialty interest groups to collaborate on specialty-specific programming for the COM student population. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing available match-related data, reports, systems, and processes, as well as professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices. Ensure achievement of deadlines (monitoring due dates, collecting data, sending reminders, resolving problems, etc.). Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) regarding all things pertaining to the COM Career and Residency Placement Advising process. Provide guidance on the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) content and MSPE-related issues for students, faculty, and staff. Responsible for drafting and finalizing the MSPE and MSPE Addendum. Maintain accurate and organized records of sensitive information and related documentation in accordance with FERPA. Maintains confidentiality and has a strong commitment to ethical conduct, adhering to university standards. Contribute to team excellence by collaborating with team members to achieve departmental goals and needs by performing additional duties as needed/assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred. Equivalent work experience may be considered. Effective verbal and written communication and proficient public speaking skills are required. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively and work efficiently with diverse individuals required. Experience in higher education, advising, counseling, or teaching of students is preferred. Experience in undergraduate medical education or graduate medical education preferred. In-depth knowledge and understanding of the residency application and match processes, including timelines preferred. Proficient in problem-solving, prioritization, and multitasking within a deadline-driven environment, with a demonstrated track record of proactivity and intellectual curiosity. Must have excellent organizational skills, be detail-oriented, and be a self-starter. Ability to be flexible and able to shift priorities as demands change.
