About the role

The Special Education Teacher will develop and implement individualized educational plans while providing instruction and mentorship to students in a residential treatment setting. They are responsible for monitoring student progress, collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team, and maintaining a safe, positive learning environment.

Overview PURPOSE STATEMENT

Teach students basic academic, social, and other formative skills, through instruction in one or more subjects. Promote physical, mental and social development in a residential treatment setting.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Identify the educational needs of students then develop formal educational plan or program to meet those needs. Create lesson plans to teach a subject(s) and teach students how to study or communicate with others. Observe students to evaluate their educational abilities, strengths and weaknesses, working with them to improve their abilities and work on their weaknesses. Teach and mentor students as a class, in small groups or one-on-one, supervise students in non-classroom settings such as during meal times and field trips. Communicate with family members, counselors, administrators and other teachers on progress. Work with students individually to help overcome specific learning challenges, prepare students for standardized tests, as required by state. Document educational plans, goals and progress, as required by the facility and the state of Utah. Supervise classroom and collaborate with direct carfe staff to maintain a positive environment for learning. Develop and enforce classroom rules and administrative policies. Abide by Behavior Management Techniques. Complete transcripts, evaluations, and academic recommendations to be sent to each student’s home school upon discharge Demonstrate knowledge of Special Education Regulations, Core curriculum and credit requirements. Act as a member of the multi-disciplinary team and attend meetings regularly. Follow school calendar including holidays, quarters, etc. Coordinate with home school districts for IEP meetings, delivery of services, etc. Participate in tours for parents and referral sources. Maintain student confidentiality according to HIPAA standards Maintain an overall good work attitude, promoting cooperation and professionalism in interactions with other staff members. Attend and complete required trainings. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned in a timely manner. Follow facilities safety guidelines and maintain safety for oneself, clients, visitors and co-workers and on an ongoing basis is processing whether or not the environment poses any safety hazards or unsafe conditions. Comply with responsibilities for emergency preparedness, fire plan and attends safety education/training classes. Sign the State Code of Conduct yearly and familiarize self with standards that ensure patients' rights are maintained and abide by those standards. OTHER FUNCTIONS: Perform other functions and tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in Education or related field which is eligible for teacher certification or license within the state of Utah. One or more years’ experience working with children or adolescents with behavior or emotional problems preferred. Must be knowledgeable of the developmental stages and behaviors for age group of students. LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS: Current certification or license to teach within the state of Utah. CPR/1st Aid and de-escalation/restraint certification required (training available upon hire and offered by facility). Requirements

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field and possess a current teaching certification or license in the state of Utah. Experience working with children or adolescents with behavioral or emotional challenges is preferred.
