  • SCOPE: Perform specialized work by assisting school teachers in instructing and supervising the activities of students to provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning classroom environment. The position is responsible for assisting assigned teachers in preparing instructional materials, preparing classrooms for activities, supervising and assisting children in the classroom and in other areas of the school, reinforcing classroom lessons, and providing other assistance as requested. The position works under direct supervision according to set procedures.

  • FUNCTIONS: Teacher’s Assistant shall use best professional efforts and skills to perform duties in a diligent, energetic, competent, and ethical manner, consistent with the School’s established policies, directives, and expected practices. You understand and accept that the values of Southern Avenue Charter, temperance and tolerance apply to your interactions with your supervisors, colleagues, students, parents, staff, and all others with whom you come in contact at or on behalf of the School. Teacher's Assistant shall use the best professional efforts and skills to perform duties in a diligent, energetic, competent, and ethical manner, consistent with the School’s established policies, directives, and expected practices. Provide assistance to assigned teachers in maintaining a well-organized, smoothly functioning classroom for the benefit of both teachers and students. Assists students with exercises and class activities; concentrates efforts with small groups of students and individuals as necessary. Compiles, prepares and organizes materials and classroom for instruction and classroom activities. Assist in cleaning and storing of materials after completion of activities. Reinforces all knowledge and skills taught by the classroom teacher. Assists teachers by maintaining student records, recording daily attendance, grading assignments, administering standardized tests, and recording and/or analyzing tests. scores/grades, substituting as needed, setting up special projects, escorting children to other areas of the school, monitoring student behavior, running errands. Collect money for activity fees, school fees, and or school pictures. Supervises and assists students when unloading and loading buses, in the halls, on field trips, during testing, during lunch, during computer lab, and on school grounds. May assist students with special needs and/or in need of special attention; provides assistance with daily living routines, skills and concepts including personal hygiene, toileting, dressing, self-feeding; may assist with physical health programs including physical therapy and adjusting special/adaptive equipment for student use; lifts or assists students in and out of special needs equipment as necessary. Assist in establishing and implementing behavioral objectives. Models appropriate social and play skills; observes students' behavior and notifies teacher and/or school nurse of behavioral changes as appropriate; redirects behavior if possible; may work with individual students to help them adjust behaviorally and academically into mainstream classroom and social situations. Assist the teacher and respond to inquiries from parents and others; Assist the teacher in preparing notes. Receives and responds to inquiries from parents and others; assists in preparing notes and placing phone calls to parents as necessary. Assist the teacher in performing routine clerical tasks as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and records, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, and preparing notices and newsletters.   • Required: High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education preferred) Previous experience working with children or in a classroom setting preferred Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and school staff Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude
  • Basic organizational and time-management skills
  • Preferred: Experience with classroom management techniques Familiarity with educational technology or learning platforms Ability to support diverse learning styles and needs

Requirements

Candidates must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent, with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education preferred. Previous experience working with children or in a classroom setting is also preferred.
