Provide sign language interpreting and communication access services to deaf and hard of hearing students in K-12 school settings. You'll interpret in classrooms and small-group settings, support students during tutoring and daily instruction, and help students access the full curriculum alongside their hearing peers. This role collaborates closely with teachers, families, and multidisciplinary teams to support each student's communication and learning goals. Educational Interpreter Key Responsibilities Interpreting & Communication Access: Interpret manually and orally for deaf and hard of hearing students in classroom and small-group settings, matching the language and intent of the speaker to the student's receptive communication level as outlined in their IEP. Preparation & Collaboration: Work with teachers and staff ahead of each assignment to review upcoming subject matter, vocabulary, and content, so students have full access to classroom instruction. IEP Participation: Participate as a member of the IEP team when appropriate. Share observations on communication strategies, the student's use of interpreter services, and academic, behavioral, and functional progress during class periods. Instructional Support: Under the classroom teacher's direction, support individual and small-group instructional activities, assist with daily assignments, and help with remedial or makeup work as needed. Documentation & Confidentiality: Maintain accurate records related to interpreting assignments and student progress. Uphold student confidentiality and support classroom, school, and district expectations at all times. Educational Interpreter Qualifications Education: High school diploma, GED, or California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate.
Fluency in written and spoken English, knowledge of core subject areas, and knowledge of child development.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
