The Substitute Teacher instructs students during a regular teacher's absence by following provided lesson plans and ensuring students complete assigned tasks. They are also responsible for maintaining a safe environment and notifying administration of any unusual incidents.

Under the supervision of the School Administration along with the support from Temporary Services, the HCPSS Retired Substitute Teacher instructs students during the absence of a regular teacher. HCPSS Retired Substitute Teacher are expected to maintain a professional attitude toward their work and support the mission and goals of the school system.
HCPSS Retired Substitute Teachers are temporary at-will employees and are assigned on an as needed basis due to teacher absences or position vacancies.
Essential knowledge, skills, and abilities
Payment for a HCPSS Retired Substitute Teachers is based on a half day (3 hours and 59 minutes or less) or full day assignment (7 hours) and may be daily, or extended assignment. All Substitute Teachers are hired at a base rate of pay.
All Substitute Teachers are hired at a base rate of pay. A substitute’s base rate will always be reflected on the compensation tab in Workday, regardless of the type of job to which they are assigned at a given time.
Daily Base Rate of Pay: $157
Long-Term Daily Rate: $169 (Must commit to 10 or more consecutive days for a particular absence or vacancy with a consistent schedule). Long-term substitutes must be assigned by Temporary Services and the pay will be reflected on the paychecks coded as “substitute level 2”.

All employees, regular and temporary, must be fingerprinted, have a criminal background investigation completed, and successfully complete the Maryland Employment History Review, pursuant to Section 6-113.2 of the Education Article, Annotated Code of Maryland. In addition, some positions will require completion of a physical examination and/or drug testing.
