- DESCRIPTION Under the supervision of the School Administration along with the support from Temporary Services, the HCPSS Retired Substitute Teacher instructs students during the absence of a regular teacher.
- HCPSS Retired Substitute Teacher are expected to maintain a professional attitude toward their work and support the mission and goals of the school system.
- HCPSS Retired Substitute Teachers are temporary at-will employees and are assigned on an as needed basis due to teacher absences or position vacancies.
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must meet all qualifications below to be considered for the vacancy.
- Must be a Howard County Public School System retiree 45-Day Rule: Due to MSRA regulations, there is a mandatory 45-day waiting period after your retirement date before you can be rehired.
- No education or reference surveys will need to be provided due to being a HCPSS Retiree ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES The below list is a summary of the functions of the job, not an exhaustive or comprehensive list of all possible job responsibilities, tasks, and duties.
- Must be flexible to support other classes as needed.
- Must follow all HCPSS polices and procedures.
- Follows the lesson plan(s) left by the teacher and ensure students complete assigned tasks Maintains a safe environment.
- Uses materials provided by the teacher or other school personnel.
- Avoids engaging in or encouraging discussions of inappropriate or non-school related topics.
- Becomes familiar with emergency procedures.
- Notifies school administration of any unusual incidents which have occurred during the school day.
- Leaves information for the teacher concerning the day’s activities.
- Reports suspected child abuse/neglect per Howard County Public School System policy.
- Other duties as assigned.

- EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION Compensation Payment for a HCPSS Retired Substitute Teachers is based on a half day (3 hours and 59 minutes or less) or full day assignment (7 hours) and may be daily, or extended assignment.
- All Substitute Teachers are hired at a base rate of pay.

- A substitute’s base rate will always be reflected on the compensation tab in Workday, regardless of the type of job to which they are assigned at a given time.
- Daily Base Rate of Pay: $157 Long-Term Daily Rate: $169 (Must commit to 10 or more consecutive days for a particular absence or vacancy with a consistent schedule).
- Long-term substitutes must be assigned by Temporary Services and the pay will be reflected on the paychecks coded as “substitute level 2”.
