Classification Title: Temporary Position

Description

Under the supervision of the School Administration, the Substitute Teacher instructs students during the absence of a regular teacher. Substitute Teachers are expected to maintain a professional attitude toward their work and support the mission and goals of the school system.

Substitute Teacher do receive benefits and are assigned due to teacher absences or position vacancies as needed. Payment for Substitute Teachers is based on a half day (3 hours and 59 minutes) or full day assignment and may be daily, or extended assignment. Substitute Teacher must commit to at least two (2) days per week, per quarter to be eligible for consideration.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications below to be considered for the vacancy.

Education

• A minimum of an associate's degree or successful completion of 60 college credit hours is required.

References

Two supervisory references will be requested prior to any offer of employment. A task action will be sent by your recruiter upon meeting job qualifications.

At least one of the supervisory references must be from the most current job listed under the experience section of the application.

Additional requirements

Substitutes are required to maintain an average workload of two days per week per quarter during the entire school year. Additionally, attendance at the substitute orientation is mandatory for Frontline sub management system access.

Essential position responsibilities

  • Follows the lesson plan(s) left by the teacher and ensure students complete assigned tasks
  • Maintains a safe environment
  • Uses materials provided by the teacher or other school personnel
  • Avoids engaging in or encouraging discussions of inappropriate or non-school related topics
  • Becomes familiar with emergency procedures
  • Notifies school administration of any unusual incidents which have occurred during the school day
  • Leaves information for the teacher concerning the day’s activities
  • Reports suspected child abuse/neglect per Howard County Public School System policy
  • Other duties as assigned.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Professional references will be contacted prior to any offer of employment. Recommended candidates will be required to provide references from current and recent supervisors.

All employees, regular and temporary, must be fingerprinted, have a criminal background investigation completed, and successfully complete the Maryland Employment History Review, pursuant to Section 6-113.2 of the Education Article, Annotated Code of Maryland. In addition, some positions will require completion of a physical examination and/or drug testing.
