Position Function

The Student Success Coordinator is responsible for fostering a supportive environment that enhances the overall student experience for veterinary students. This position plays a critical role in providing guidance and resources to help students navigate the challenges of veterinary school. The Student Success Coordinator focuses on personal development, well-being, and engagement, ensuring students thrive both inside and outside the classroom. The role involves developing and managing student programs, supporting student organizations, and connecting students with resources that enhance their personal and professional growth.

Duties: and Responsibilities:

  • 1.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all student success initiatives within the veterinary school 2.
  • Develop, manage, and evaluate student success programs designed to support student engagement and success, including orientation, mentorship programs, financial literacy workshops, and overall wellness initiatives tailored to the needs of veterinary students.
  • 3.
  • Maintain accurate records of student success programs, tracking participation, feedback, and student outcomes to evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives and to inform future program development and improvements.
  • 4.
  • Provide financial aid advising to DVM students, with an emphasis on loan repayment counseling, financial literacy, and transition-to-practice support, in coordination with the Admissions & Student Success Coordinator and the MSU Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
  • 5.
  • Provide guidance and support to students in navigating the unique stressors and challenges faced by veterinary students through various strategies and initiatives that support students’ mental health, work-life balance, and overall well-being.
  • 6.
  • Assist with the development of early intervention strategies to identify students at risk and coordinate efforts to provide timely academic, emotional, or personal support.
  • 7.
  • Provide oversight and guidance to student organizations and clubs, ensuring compliance with school policies and procedures.
  • 8.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with CVM faculty, staff, student leaders, and university partners to strengthen student success initiatives and ensure they are well-integrated into the overall student experience.
  • 9.
  • Assist with the veterinary admissions process by engaging with prospective students, providing information on student life and support services, as well as assisting with student application processing.
  • 10.
  • Stay current with trends and innovations in student advising, student success, financial aid, and veterinary medical education through professional development opportunities.
  • 11.
  • Participate in training and workshops to enhance advising strategies and improve student engagement practices.
  • 12.
  • Collaborates with other units engaged in student success initiatives 13.
  • Use data and software platforms to document and assess student success metrics 14.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., higher education, student affairs, animal science, biology) and at least 2-4 years of experience directly related to student affairs, student success, financial aid or a similar student-facing role in higher education setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field (e.g., higher education, student affairs, veterinary medicine).
  • Experience in veterinary education or within a professional or graduate-level program.
  • Knowledge of veterinary medical education and unique challenges faced by veterinary students.
  • Familiarity with student success metrics and using data to support decision-making in student retention and success strategies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and counseling skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and work independently while collaborating with others.
  • Demonstrated experience in student engagement, retention, and academic support programs.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with an ability to manage student records and academic data effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and student information systems; experience with specialized software for tracking student success preferred.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
