Job description

  • Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — is seeking a passionate and dedicated Karate Instructor to join our programming team.
  • The Karate Specialist will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children’s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.
  • The Karate Specialist will support our wellness and social development curriculum for students K-12. promoting not only physical fitness but also self-discipline, respect, and confidence through martial arts.
  • This role will involve developing lesson plans that cater to various skill levels and ensuring a safe, engaging, and supportive environment for all participants.
  • The Karate Instructor will serve as a positive role model and mentor, instilling the values of discipline, respect, and perseverance in students, while encouraging their personal growth.

  • Must have at least 2 years of Karate teaching experience Who You Are A commitment to Youth Development and the mission and programs of HCZ Martial Arts training Passion and experience with arts education, particularly involving K-12 school-aged youth.
  • Flexibility, creativity, and enthusiasm for young people Excellent planning, organization, communication, and time management skills Ability to provide consistent and positive instruction as well as receive constructive criticism.
  • Experience working in youth development with K-12 school youth and teaching well-developed martial arts courses, social consciousness, self-identity, and efficacy.
  • Energetic, motivated self-starter and a team player Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively on projects with staff and students, and the full curriculum What You’ll Do Design and implement engaging karate lesson plans that address the physical and developmental needs of students.
  • Teach children and young adults the core techniques and philosophies of karate.
  • Promote a culture of respect, discipline, and teamwork within the dojo.
  • Monitor and assess student progress, providing constructive feedback to encourage improvement.
  • Prepare students for belt promotions and competitions when appropriate.
