Job Title: Pop-up Play Lead Staff

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Type: Part-Time

Reports to: Program Coordinator

Essential Functions: ● Assist with program design, preparation, and implementation

● Set up play materials, supervise and support youth during play, return play materials to storage, and check over the condition of the materials before and after play

● Maintain emotionally and physically safe environment for youth during self-determined outdoor play

● Observe attentively and communicate clearly in support of physical safety, social-emotional needs, and relationship-building

● Convey to youth the risks of the activities they are doing and help youth make safe judgments

● Assist with training summer out-of-school time staff on Pop-up Play programming

● Assist with communication and relationship building with partner sites and families

● Be reliable and responsible

● Assist administrative tasks, including data entry and evaluation requirements

● Assist with grant search and writing to support program sustainability and expansion

● Foster an inclusive environment appreciative of differences in the workplace

● Participate in and lead efforts to support the Y's commitment to equity and diversity

● Overseeing program management in absence of Program Coordinator

Supervisory Responsibility: ● Supervision of staff during Pop-up Play programming in absence of Site Coordinator

Work Environment

This position operates primarily outdoors at Laura MacArthur Elementary School and serves youth aged 5-7 years. Programming takes place on the school field in various weather conditions.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

● Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to program participants.

● Ability to observe participant behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

● Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the site and facilities and participants and staff behavior.

● Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

● Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist participants in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of participants.

● Ability to repeatedly lift, carry, and maneuver large play materials (ladders, mats, cubes, planks) weighing up to 75 pounds. This includes sustained physical effort over 20-30 minutes during setup and takedown of program materials.

● Occasionally sit, climb, or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This is a part-time position.
  • Expected hours are approximately 20 hours per week during summer programming (June-August), with roughly 15 hours onsite and 5 hours offsite/remote.
  • Typical summer hours, Monday-Friday 8:30am-12:30pm.
  • During the rest of the year, expected hours are approximately 10 hours per week for planning, training, grant writing, and program development.
  • Some weekend and evening hours for staff development and training may be required.
  • It is expected that lead staff engage in direct service during program hours and are in the ratio required by the Pop-up Play Program.

Travel

There will be some traveling locally for staff trainings.

Required Education and Experience

● 18 years of age or older

● High School/GED plus 1-2 years’ post-secondary education, preferably in field related to youth and families

● CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training with 60 days of hire date
