About the role

Members will provide community wellness education to K-12 students and build positive connections through mentorship. They will also conduct outreach to improve access to social services and support students in navigating barriers related to education and health.

Mental Health AmeriCorps Program Safe Passages is a non-profit organization based in Oakland, CA.

We work to improve the lives of children, youth, and families through education programs, community partnerships, and public advocacy.

We are looking for passionate, motivated, and dedicated individuals like you to join our AmeriCorps program for a year of service starting in August 2026.

AmeriCorps members serve in teams at school sites and in the community, working with students and families to support their well-being through education, mentoring, and resource navigation.

No prior teaching experience is necessary—just a commitment to making a difference in students’ and families’ lives.

Safe Passages is looking for compassionate, motivated individuals to serve as AmeriCorps Mental Health & Wellness Members—supporting students and families in building confidence, resilience, and healthy habits.

Responsibilities (Your Impact): Provide fun and engaging community wellness education to K-12 students on topics such as community health, hygiene, fitness, food security, nutrition, stress management, and emotional and mental wellness.

Build meaningful, positive connections with students through mentorship and daily engagement that support community and mental wellness.

Conduct outreach to students, families, and community members to improve access to social services, public benefits, and health resources.

Support students in navigating barriers related to education, housing, food security, and healthcare access.

Facilitate and support school-based as well as program-based health and wellness programs and events.

Assist in collecting and tracking data on outreach efforts and student support services.

Participate in regular trainings, team meetings, and professional development to enhance skills in community outreach, community health, youth development, and leadership.

Benefits

Twice monthly living allowance starting at: $1,157 (full-time) $868 (part-time – 30 hrs per week) $434 (part-time – 15 hrs per week) Segal AmeriCorps Education Award: $5,176 (full-time) $3,697 (part-time – 30 hrs per week) $1,956 (part-time – 15 hrs per week) Potential transportation stipend Application support for CalFresh, Covered CA, and other public benefits Health coverage and childcare reimbursement (full-time members only) Ongoing training and mentorship from experienced educators and community resource navigators. Required Qualifications (What You Bring): A genuine interest in working with children and community members and supporting their growth A positive, flexible, and resilient attitude Communication skills to work with children, families, school staff, and volunteers Experience working with and respect for diverse communities and backgrounds Desired Qualifications (Bonus Skills): Experience in community outreach, youth development, teaching or tutoring Demonstrated commitment to community service Bilingual or multilingual skills (highly valued) Eligibility Requirements: Must pass criminal history check (FBI, DOJ, NSOPW) searches Proof of tuberculosis clearance High school diploma or equivalent Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal permanent resident status Commitment to full term of service Must be 17+ at time of service start This program is open to all individuals regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, age, religion, political affiliation, marital or parental status, genetic information, or military service. The Safe Passages AmeriCorps program is administered by California Volunteers and sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Requirements

Candidates should have a genuine interest in working with children and communities, along with strong communication skills. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, and candidates must pass a criminal history check.
