Liberal Arts in Prison Program (LAPP) Summer Program Coordinator - Student
The Liberal Arts in Prison Program (LAPP) seeks a responsible and detail-oriented student to serve as the program coordinator supporting academic programming for incarcerated students at Newton Correctional Facility (Newton, IA) and the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women (Mitchellville, IA).
Position Overview The Program Coordinator supports both instructional and administrative aspects of the program, working closely with students, faculty, and staff to help ensure the effective operation of courses across both facilities.
- Key Responsibilities
- Provide tutoring support and assist in gathering research materials for incarcerated college students (one course at each facility during the summer term)
- Assist with preparation for the upcoming academic year, including admissions processes and course material coordination
- Coordinate communication among incarcerated students, faculty, and program staff
- Support administrative functions, including clerical tasks, data management, and record-keeping
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Strong academic background; coursework in Introduction to Statistics is preferred
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant technologies
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- High level of attention to detail and adaptability in a range of work environments
- Ability to maintain clear and professional boundaries in a correctional setting
- Additional Requirements
- Willingness to travel regularly from campus to both prisons
- Availability to work evenings on a regular basis
- Valid driver’s license required; use of a campus vehicle is preferred, with mileage reimbursement available for personal vehicle use
- Current Grinnell College student (graduating seniors are not eligible; rising juniors and seniors preferred)
Position Details
- Duration: Flexible; must continue through at least July 31, with the option to extend through the full summer. There is also the possibility of renewal for the following academic year, to be evaluated each semester
- Hours: 16-20 hours per week, depending on availability and program needs (to be finalized)
- Clearance: Approval required, including a background check
- Eligibility: F-1 visa holders are not eligible for this position
- Additional Note: Students participating in a MAP are not eligible to hold this position concurrently
