Position Summary

The Classroom Teacher is responsible for providing quality educational service to Walden School students. This includes planning creative lessons and classes that satisfy IEP goals, maintaining a classroom environment that fosters learning, and implementing behavior or treatment plans as they apply to the classroom setting.

Functions and responsibilities

Work collaboratively with the school’s clinical team to adapt and modify their instruction to meet the individual needs of their students.

Demonstrates sensitivity to cultural differences within the school community.

Prepares daily lesson plans and educational programming consistent with students’ Individualized Educational Plans. Provides detailed lesson plans and assignments for classroom assistants.

Develops thematic units that identify long-range goals and objectives with respect to the educational and emotional needs of the students, taking into account the varying learning styles of individual students.

Prepares instructional materials incorporating principles of effective instruction, such as: visual aids, curriculum modifications, and mediated learning principles.

Writes educational portions of IEPs, quarterly reports, and other reports as necessary, according to established deadlines.

Reports on students’ progress through written and verbal communication.

Makes learning goals clear to the students and maintains high standards and expectations.

Requirements

Masters Degree in Education/Deaf Education Massachusetts State Certification (preferred) A minimum of conversational fluency in American Sign Language required, with native, or near-native ASL fluency preferred Verbal and written communication skills are at sufficient level to ensure effective communication Understanding of child/adolescent mental health Interpersonal skills developed to a level which will allow smooth cooperation at all levels within the agency Must maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record when driving students or performing work-related duties
