- Classification: Salary Exempt Lane College, NCAA Division II, located in Jackson, Tennessee invites applicants for the position of Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach. This is a full-time position reporting to the Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Director of Athletics. Lane College is a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).
Responsibilities
Conducts all aspects of the program within the rules, regulations, and procedures encompassed in the NCAA, the athletic conference, College, and athletic department policies and procedures manual, with an understanding that failure to do so may lead to sanctions up to and including termination. Utilization and understanding of the NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletic programs. Responsible for assisting the head coach with organizing the program. Assists with conducting practices, motivating students, and instructing student athletes in game strategies and techniques. Assists the head coach with instructing players in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport. Organizes and directs individual and small group practice activities/exercises as directed by the head coach. Assesses player’s skills, monitors players during competition and practice, and keeps the head coach informed of the athletic performance of students. Assists with determining game strategy. Assists the head coach with supervising athletes during practices and competition. Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury. Models sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators. Maintains the equipment room in orderly condition and assumes responsibility for its security. Distributes equipment, supplies, and uniforms to students as directed by the head coach. Assists the head coach with submitting a list of award winners at the end of the season. Performs support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records. Models nondiscriminatory practice. Recruiting and retaining student-athletes. Performing other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Qualifications The successful candidate must possess the following qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Previous basketball coaching, playing, training, or related athletic experience required. Knowledge of basketball rules, techniques, strategies, player development, and athlete safety. Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with student-athletes, coaches, staff, faculty, alumni, and the community. Ability to mentor, motivate, and support student-athletes in a positive and professional manner. Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel as required by the men’s basketball schedule. Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include: Collegiate basketball playing or coaching experience. Experience coaching or recruiting at the high school, club, junior college, or collegiate level. Familiarity with NCAA Division II rules and regulations. CPR, First Aid, or athletic safety certification. Experience working in a college or university athletic department. Experience with film breakdown, scouting software, recruiting databases, or player development systems. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach should demonstrate the ability to: Teach basketball fundamentals, advanced techniques, and team concepts. Develop effective practice plans and player development strategies. Communicate effectively and professionally with student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and campus partners. Build positive and appropriate relationships with student-athletes. Maintain professionalism, sound judgment, and composure in a competitive athletic environment. Support the academic, athletic, personal, and social development of student-athletes. Work collaboratively with the Head Coach and Athletics Department staff. Understand and follow institutional, conference, and NCAA compliance requirements. Maintain appropriate boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical standards at all times. Work Schedule This is a full-time position. The work schedule may vary based on practices, games, recruiting activities, team travel, meetings, and athletic department needs. Evening, weekend, and occasional holiday work may be required. Physical Requirements This position may require the ability to: Stand, walk, bend, reach, and move for extended periods during practices, games, and athletic events. Demonstrate or assist with basketball techniques and drills when appropriate. Lift, carry, and move athletic equipment, uniforms, supplies, and related materials. Travel with the team for competitions and athletic-related activities. Work in gymnasiums, athletic facilities, training areas, and other sports-related environments.
