Job description

  • YMCA Swim instructor is a person who has a love for educating and all things swimming! They teach ages ranging from 6 months old and above. A dedication to safety and maintaining a positive and fun environment is a must for one of our instructors. Key Responsibilities
  • Ensuring safety of participants
  • Educating based on American Red Cross and/or YMCA Swim instruction lessons
  • Conducting yourself in a professional manner and being a helpful and informative team member for any questions that may arise from parents/guardians.
  • Ensuring testing, Lesson plans, and recording is concurrent with all Swim lesson requirements.
  • Skills and Qualifications
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate (preferred)
  • Prior Experience as a swim instructor is highly preferred but not required.
  • Willingness to obtain an ARC water safety Instructor or YMCA instructor certificate or equivalent upon hire.
  • Be physically fit enough to pass a swim test and demonstrate proficient knowledge of most common swimming strokes (Front crawl/ freestyle, Back crawl/backstroke, and breaststroke) during the interview.
  • Work Environment
  • Swim instructors will be teaching from in the water with their students. Lessons range from 30-40 minutes and typically in the morning or evening time. A common day looks like: coming in 15 min early to set up for class, teaching 1-2 group lessons, cleaning up then (if applicable) teaching 1-2 private lessons afterwards. Most shifts range from 2-5 hours, 2-4 times per week.

Additional Work Opportunities

  • Obtain an ARC Lifeguard Certificate and work as a lifeguard as well as a swim instructor (Most Common)
