Position Summary

The YMCA of Southern Nevada is looking for licensed teachers to facilitate our 21st Century Power Scholars afterschool program this fall. In this role you will be responsible for implementing the academic components of the BellXcel Power Scholars program curriculum at partner elementary schools. The program run from 2:45pm – 6:00pm, Monday- Thursday during the school year. ABOUT THE PROGRAM: Research shows that young people from underserved and low-income families often start school underprepared and fall behind their peers as a result, creating an opportunity gap. Through focused programming and support, the Y is committed to closing this gap. The Power Scholars program uses evidence based curriculum and licensed teachers to support students’ educational readiness, engagement and outcomes, and emotional and physical development while also providing afterschool childcare at no cost to students or families.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver relevant and engaging lessons utilizing a variety of instructional methods Implement literacy and math curricula and activities to meet academic standards Utilize the 30-minute daily prep period to collaborate, organize materials, and prepare lesson plans Work closely with supervisors, school administration, parents, and teachers to develop strategies for student success Implement co-teaching instructional strategies with program assistant teachers Motivate and hold scholars to high academic expectations Attend and participate in regular training, meetings, and staff development Perform all other duties as assigned ABUSE RISK MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS: Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children. Attend required abuse risk management training. Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations. Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements. Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities. END RESULTS: Provide safe, secure and educational programs at the afterschool site. Impact the overall effectiveness of the association's implementation of the YMCA mission through youth development. QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS: Valid Nevada state teaching certificate 1-2 years of experience facilitating out-of-school-time programming, preferably within underserved communities preferred Bi-lingual in English and Spanish, preferred Strong interpersonal and organizational skills Previous and relevant experience in utilizing and implementing data-driven instructional practices Experience in the use of technology (computer/Internet) for assessment and instruction Knowledge of differentiated instructional practices and strategies Drive to improve the minds and lives of scholars within the community Proven track record of high achievement in a classroom setting Mastery of and enthusiasm for (literacy / math / literacy and math) academic standards and instructional rigor Excellent organizational and communication skills Committed to the goals of the program and approach Love and respect for children Hold current American Red Cross Certifications in CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid within 30 days of hire
