Position Title: College & Career Counselor Reports To Principal or Director of Student Services

Position Summary

The College & Career Counselor supports students in developing academic, career, and postsecondary plans that prepare them for success after high school graduation. The counselor provides guidance in college admissions, financial aid, career exploration, workforce readiness, and academic planning while collaborating with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community partners. Duties and Responsibilities

College Readiness & Postsecondary Planning Advise students on college selection, admissions requirements, and application processes. Assist students with college essays, applications, resumes, and recommendation procedures. Support students and families with FAFSA completion, scholarships, grants, and financial aid resources. Organize and coordinate college fairs, campus visits, and informational workshops. Maintain current knowledge of college admissions trends and requirements. Career Development & Workforce Readiness Help students identify career interests, strengths, and goals through assessments and counseling. Provide career exploration opportunities, including internships, apprenticeships, job shadowing, and vocational pathways. Conduct workshops on resume writing, interviewing, workplace skills, and career planning. Collaborate with local businesses, colleges, military recruiters, and workforce organizations to expand student opportunities. Academic Counseling Monitor student academic progress and graduation requirements. Assist students in course selection aligned with career and college goals. Develop intervention plans for students experiencing academic difficulties. Analyze transcripts and student data to support individualized planning. Student & Family Support Meet individually and in groups with students regarding academic, college, and career goals. Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and postsecondary planning. Provide referrals to social, emotional, and mental health resources when appropriate. Promote equity and access for all students in postsecondary opportunities. Program Coordination & Administration Maintain accurate counseling records, reports, and documentation. Coordinate standardized testing information and readiness activities. Track student postsecondary outcomes and program effectiveness. Participate in school improvement initiatives and professional development activities. Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal regulations. Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree in School Counseling, Education, Psychology, Human Services, or related field required. Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field preferred. Certifications/Licensure Valid state School Counselor certification/licensure preferred or required depending on district/state. Knowledge of college admissions systems and financial aid procedures. Experience Experience working with middle school or high school students preferred. Experience in college admissions, academic advising, counseling, or workforce development preferred.
